I'm not expecting expert advice but I want to double check that I'm not just being dumb before I call a plumber out.

Last night our central heating didn't fire up when the timer said it should. I messed about with the thermostat and timer, still nothing.

We have a 'Heat only' condensing boiler fitted and as it heats the hot water I thought I would try it. When the hot water is on at the control unit the boiler works, when I swith the heating and hot water on the heating works too.

So my thoughts are that the boiler isn't dead smile but something isn't doing it's job properly does anyone have any idea if that something would be a job that needs a gas bloke to sort or just a bit of common sense?

i'm sure a plumber will be along shortly, but it sounds like one of your motorised valves has gone

That sounds complicated, I was hoping someone would just be able to tell me to turn it off and back on.

FYI It was £80 to have the valve replaced on mine a few weeks ago.

That sounds promising. I wasn't overly worried anyway as the boiler still does its job of making water hot so I know it isn't a terminal problem (yet).

Sounds like the divertor valve, if that is the correct name, directs the hot water from the boiler to either the heating, or the hot water system. Sometimes it clogs up with lime or rust, and stops diverting.

find the motorised valve

On the side they sometimes have a small lever.
Move the lever and see if the boiler fires up.

The valves are available on the screwfix website and easy to chamnge without touching the plumbing provided you are happy to turn the electric off (maybe onlt to the heating) and swap 4 or 5 wires for new ones.

I did mine earlier this year.

Yep, if I've read it correctly, it's the tri-valve jobbie (technical term yes ); happened to me and is relatively cheap to replace. I think I paid about £60 5 years ago for a plumber to do it.

The above sounds promising thanks everyone, I think it could be the pump though (or more accurately the switch on the pump). I have taken the boxing around the pipework off and can't see any valves that look like the ones I found on screwfix.

The pump has a speed setting and when I knock it onto the middle setting the heating returns to normal, so it looks like a wiring fault or a lime filled pump (most likely considering where I live).

Simply touching the pipes (careful, they may be hot!) will give you a clue if it's all on.

Pump, and diverter valve, two different items there. The pump simply moves the water, the diverter valve sends it either to radiators or hot water.

If you could upload some pictures of your set up I could help point you in the right direction. You could have one of many set-ups, with one of many issues.

Do you have any motorised valves near the pump? How old is the system? Sounds to me like it is behaving like an old gravity set up.

Any valves near the cylinder? How thick is the pipework going to the cylinder?
