I'm after a set of 215/50x17 tyres & thought I'd have a look at ebay.

These appear to be quite a bargain as they are mostly still sporting 7mm of tread and are not too far away, or I could have delivered as it is offered at reasonable cost.

The goodyear generally go for about £50 part worn so the price is currently excellent.
The seller has confirmed that they were not off an accident damaged car but were just swapped over for winter tyres and that they don't have any repairs or damage.

Are they worth a punt?

How do you mean (not as a set)?

I agree, best bought as a set yes

Although, does not make much difference I guess other than the possibility of doing a deal for the carriage but I'm close enough to collect them.

I would not fit part worn tyres to a car.

No one ever admits the car concerned was written off.

If the truth was admitted they could not sell the tyres.

Your tyres are the only contact and control between you and eternity.

Never fit part worn tyres. That is my advice.

just meaning, that if you need all 4 of them, then you need to win all the auctions, win 3 and you're stuck looking for another :/

so what if the car was written off? It might have had a lorry fall on its roof.

I wrote off a MR2 turbo - but only one of the four wheels mounted the kerb and ripped the suspension out. So the other three tyres / wheels were perfect.

Doesn't mean the car was written off.

Lots of part worns come from Germany where they have higher wear limits than the UK.

I bought a rear view mirror from a write-off in a scrap yard, and every time I use it, I die in a terrible accident.
Honest.

I asked the seller about them and he said he can show me the car they came off which is now fitted with the winter tyres. He appears to only have the 4 so doesn't look like he is a tyre dealer.

I take your point though.

I have fitted part worns to my cars for years, both my road and track cars, probably saved thousands and never once had any problems.

We have a local tyre place does this and apparently they pay just £2 each for them.

They sell NCT's with as little as 4mm of tread for £50 - no wonder he runs a GT3 wink

So having bought a second-hand car, do you immediately bin the tyres and fit 4 factory-fresh ones? (assuming you may buy 2nd hand motors)

I'd be willing to bet a lot of part worn tyres come from cars whose owners were told they needed new tyres by a fast fit place, when the tyres were still good enough.

I have a coffee cup with a handle i glued back on when it broke. I used some russian glue that i found in a draw i did not own, nor had been looked in for seemingly a long time. However i would not put part worns on unless i was only the only person ever to travel in the car.

Your call.

So true! smile

One garage called my wife (her previous car was in for MOT & service) to tell her she needed a new set of discs and pads all round at a cost of £470 odd. I said ask them if it passed and they told her yes, so I said to her that we'd pick it up and tell them we'd think about it.

When we collected it I asked how much more wear they thought they had left in them and they replied 10 to 15k miles.

I don't know what all the fuss is about... My last set of tyres was bought from a scrap yard, already fitted and balanced on steelies, £30 for the set of 4.

I'm not sure how a part worn tyre can be a "time bomb"... it's not like a car which has been bent and straight panel put on top to hide the damage, if the tyre has been damaged, the damage will be visible, or will be felt when balancing the wheel...

Was just about to post the same, however buying part worns off ebay is slightly different from a 2nd hand car where you can at least give them a bit of an inspection prior to purchase.
