Tenerife Advice
Discussion
I'm thinking about a holiday in Tenerife but am not familiar with any of the resorts other than Playa de las Americas (which i want to avoid). Likely to be Febuary time for 2 weeks, hotel or self catering are options.
Question is, can anyone recommend some nice resorts? I'm not looking for anything like Playa, but somewhere with some life (bars, restaurants etc) would be good?

How many in your party? What ages? What do they want to do?
We're going in a couple of weeks (me, wife and our 2 kids, 3 grandparents and my bro/his Girlfriend), so we've booked a bit away from the South West strip of Americas and Christianos in Golf del Sur. Right on a quiet beach and we've got two hire cars so all good, but probably not what you're looking for. We rented a big villa in case you're wondering found here: www.villarenters.com
If you want to be a bit further in then Costa Adeje looked quite nice - a continuation up the coast from Americas / Christianos but looked a fair bit higher market.
Los Gigantes is another possible (further up the West coast again) but you're out of the nightlife there again.

Thanks for the into. Just the 2 of us. Late 30's early 40's. Looking to find that mix of nice bars and restaurants without the hectic pace of Playa. Not being familar with Tenerife i wondered if there was anywhere that may fit the bill. We've done the other islands so thought we'd see what Tenerife had to offer. We're going in a couple of weeks (me, wife and our 2 kids, 3 grandparents and my bro/his Girlfriend), so we've booked a bit away from the South West strip of Americas and Christianos in Golf del Sur. Have you been to Playa ? I'd give it a chance by staying in either Los Christianos or Adeje as it's cleaned up a lot in the last few years.Question is, can anyone recommend some nice resorts? Playa is a massive resort and typically, only one bit of Playa is bad, the area in around the Veronicas strip where all the bars and clubs are. Most of the accomodation around these parts are the typical 60/70's high rise hotel blocks. Ive been going to Tenerife for years and would recommend either, Costa Adeje (some parts which come under this area used to be classed as Playa) or Los Cristianos. I would definately avoid Los Gigantes, I've never really been a fan of the place and seems to be frequented more by the Club 60-80

Another vote for los cristianos, a good balance of peace and quiet, with a decent range of bars for a few drinks and meals. Brilliant enormous sandy beaches.
Playa is a half hour stroll away if you fancy a bit of lively action, but far enough away not to be a problem.
Transfer time to and from airport is only 15 mins or so and around 20 quid in a taxi.
(We've been half a dozen times, recommended)

Another angle, try up north if you don't like your menus to be colour pictures of roast beef, or fish and chips with mushy peas. Yes the weather may not be quite as reliable, but it is the true Canaries.
An added bonus is the time of year you are looking to go is carnival/festival time (week of shrove tuesday/ash wednesday and weekends either side). If you've never been have quick google for Tenerife carnival, they are the biggest in Europe and second only to Rio. I've been going for years and can honestly say the tourist make up is 80% locals / spanish mainlanders (mainlanders are actually looked down on by Canarians, note the lack of a lisp in the Canarian language to spot the differnce), 10% German, 5% Scandics, 5% Brits.

We stopped in between Los Christianos and Las Americas.
I was a bit concerned before we went that it would be like the TV series Benidorm but was suprised. Some nice restaurants, the place we stopped was superb, it was clean and far from tacky. (Though there are the usual "Brit Pubs and Clubs" in Las Americas.
Had a brilliant holiday!
