Apologies if there is already a thread on this. Just watched it on 4OD. Pretty amazing viewing. What do you think. Good acting or real?

They're animated? Or they don't exist?

Was the 'guess the wrapped up drawing in the Tate' one of his experiments?

Intersting watching, with a twist - which is pretty much what he always does.

In his latest 'experiment' he hypnotised a guy to carry out an assassination on Stephen Fry. It obviously wasn't real but the guy didn't know that. If you have a spare 40mins then it's worth a watch on 4OD. If it isn't real then the guy he hypnotised is an incredible actor! Compelling viewing none the less.

Never seen derren brown do magic confused

Yes, I watched the first airing of that and I got what the picture was because I'd obviously picked up the subconscious message in the newspaper that morning. Well, I'd decided it was either circles or a duck.

I found it entertaining as usual. I enjoyed the shoe removal and the part with the reveal of his pin number.

The weakest part of the show was the reaction of the small invited audience who had no knowledge of the experiment. When listening to the lecture by Stephen Fry on Words, they only offered gasps of horror when he was shot three times - this included the theatre of blood bags in his jacket and Mr Fry lying 'dead' on the stage, not moving.

Why did no-one rush to the stage to offer assistance?

Glad it wasn't just me that thought that, it all seemed pretty real apart from the audience, they barely reacted to Stephen Fry being shot.

I thought this too. They must have told them something could happen during the show. Not sure what my reaction would have been though. Probably screaming like a girl and running towards the exit.

The results Derren got in The Assassin did not surprise me at all. You might recall he did something very similar in an earlier show: The Heist

The techniques that he used were, as I am sure he would be first to admit, pretty basic in hypnosis terms but, as ever with him, the sheer brilliance and polish of his delivery made it very engaging.

I have no doubt at all that many secret services around the world have and maybe even still do create operatives in similar ways - after all, its not far removed from the training of regular troops in some ways (check out this programme on bayonet training and tell me that's not hypnotic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJBJrhUv-zA)

Two major problems:-
(1) The bloke did not go into 'marksman mode' when being shown the replay of what he did (the polka dot was visible).
(2) The fundamental flaw that the guy knew he was in a TV show (as with the 'acid' throwers) and therefore assessed there was no real risk remained i.e. you cannot hypnotise someone to do something they genuinely don't want to do or know is genuinely wrong.

I don't know if that was genuine or not but there is one coming up in the series.
They filmed it locally to me and I know some of the main participants.
They weren't stooges and they weren't primed to do what they did.

I won't spoil it by saying anymore yet.

A bit pointless mentioning it then, isn't it? wink

Hmmm?

Its the "lucky dog" one.

Photo from the day (not me, my mate tony, not that you needed to know that smile )

Two major problems with your observations

1) When the bloke was shown the replay, we were shown the condensed version of it. It skipped a few moments as we just saw it. Makes sense as I wouldn't want to sit through 5mins worth of replay I've just seen.

2) How do you explain the ice bath? His reaction to it genuinely seemed like he wasn't effected by the cold. When he wasn't in a hypnotised state he could only stand the temperature for a few seconds. Surely this proves you can be hypnotised to do something you don't want to do? (or some people)

Apologies, just read and understood your first observation. Your right! Although it did take a while for him to go into marksman mode when the polka dot dress bird walked in.

None the less interesting viewing.

It was a combination of the polkadots and the ringtone.
There was no ringtone on the replay.

Two more problems with your gigantic woooosh moments:-

(1) You've ignored the crucial point I made - he didn't react to the polka dot, we saw him see it again, condensed or not.
(2) What is there to explain about the ice, or rather I should say, slightly cold water? It's just cold, mind over matter. Most people (except complete wimps) can force themselves to tolerate it. FFS. It's not hard. Like I said, specially in the context, it is not a genuinely life threatening situation, the bloke knew they wouldn’t harm him for a TV show - despite the spiel. Loads of circus performers do it, Artic training covers it, Scandinavians and Russians do it for fun!

Get a grip boy.
