Tagging images/metadata

Something I've been wondering about lately is how people tag their photos and insert metadata (I think?) containing copyright information. Do people just do it in PS when they are editing or is there an easier way?

I've been considering lightroom as I know that can batch add the required data but know nothing about it.

Also does the tagging show up on sites like flickr when you upload or would it be purely useful for if you have your own website?

When you tag in Lightroom it shows up in Flickr etc so you only have to do it once.

I use Lightroom for image library management and raw editing. When I import images from memory cards I do this using LR and have set it to automatically add copyright, website and contact info into the metadata at that point, so I don't have to think about doing it as another step. I'll also add specific keyword tags relevant to the shoot (e.g. for a wedding shoot the name of the couple, venue etc) at the time of import too.

I import pics through Adobe Bridge, as it imports it sets basic metadata such as my details, copyright info etc. Once they're on my computer I geotag the raw files using HoudahGeo which writes the location into the exif data. I then keyword them in Photoshop. If I've got a few shots which require the same keywording I can copy it across, either in Bridge or in PS.

Once I import them into flickr all the metadata is present, title, description, keywords, copyright info and they are even mapped using the gps info I tagged them with.

Have been wondering about it lately as I just normally do everything in flickr once the pictures are uploaded. Just wondering if there was an easy but not sure if there is any benefit in tagging outside of flickr yet.

I could understand it if I had my own site but at this stage I haven't.

Will play around with Bridge a bit more.

If you do all your keywording on the raw or psd file when you make a jpeg out of it the data is carried through, ideal if you go back to it later and edit the original file.

Mmm, unfortunately I'm only on Adobe CS3 so it doesn't support the CR2 files out of the camera!

Depending on your camera it may be able to write copyright info as it saves each photo.
