Father in law has been told that his oil boiler is likely on its last leg. Qoute for replacement at £5k sounds expensive to me.

Job should include rerouting flu through roof space, and radiator trv's for a 3 bed bungalow?

Any second opinions available?

Ps any recommendations welcome. West Bristol.

I was quoted 5k for new external floor standing oil combi boiler and new pipework to 10 existing rads.

Went for cylinder setup in the end.

What exactly is involved?

£5k sounds like far too much!

Simple boiler exchange shouldn't really be anymore than £1500, depending on the new boiler.

If it's to change an older system for a newer one and involves removing tanks etc and new pipework, well, £5k still seems to much. We recently had an old back boiler taken out, tanks removed and new combi boiler put in and few other bits and bobs doing for about £2k. That included leaving all the old scrap copper and tanks.

Changing a 12 year old combi for condensing.

Flu also needs upgrading and rerouting either to the ridge or into loft and out the gable at high level.

Not a lot else involved

Why does the boiler want replacing?

I have just had my 35 year old oil fired boiler serviced through CPL oil supplies, in fact most of the oil supply companies in the Bristol area, can help with servicing and new installs.

I personally would be asking about this. It's dripping water from its back end and needs removing to diagnose. At 12 years old they are being advised that it may as well be replaced.

My own preference would be to limp into spring, making sure that they have some electric heaters available over winter just in case. He could then have it pulled out and if possible repaired or if all else fails replaced

In laws are getting on though and not keen to risk it...

I had the same problem some 6 years ago with my boiler, at that time i used a retired oil heating engineer based in Clevedon. He came to my home, North of Bristol, where he dismantled the boiler, taking a part to a local welder for the part to be welded, charging me just over 150.00.

Last week the same boiler was given a full service and a clean bill of health, through CPL oil supplies by a Norwich based company, Team Energy.

Replace with a heat pump.

Seriously it's worth looking at.

It wouldn't cost 5000 - and the running costs would be lower (plus no more buying oil in advance). Plus no more servicing costs.

Downside? Depending on the size of heat pump there would be times when it could struggle a bit - nothing a fan heater wouldn't sort.
