Looking for a car to tide me over winter while I strip my MR2. Was thinking 4WD estate, as it would be good in winter weather and good for taking any scrap to the tip.

What are my options?

Might manage to pick up a higher millage Subaru Impreza Wagon?

I'm not all clued up, but I'm sure there are a few 90's Volvo's which have their 4WD when needed cars?

Other than that, I cant think of many which would satisfy with the budget.

If 4WD isn't needed I'd probably recommend a Honda Civic Aerodeck as a good cheapish Estate. My brother had one a year or two back, and it made it most places in the snow. Just make sure you've got a shovel or snow sock in case it does get stuck, but once it gets going its strong as ever.

I just picked up a 94 Isuzu Bighorn with a years ticket and 6 months tax for around that kind of money. Look at some 4x4's before the weather pushes the price up.

People suggested Legacy estates and the like for me but anything with a Subaru badge was crippling on insurance where as the Isuzu is around £400 a year with me and the OH on it.

Subaru of some flavor is all I can think of if 4WD is a must.

My 4x4 is more expensive to insure than my Impreza WRX PPP.

Both similar age, similar value.
Strange, must just be a postcode thing then.

Audi A4 or A6 but personally I'd look for a Subaru or go full 4x4 and get a Jeep Cherokee.

Could be a massive money pit but be a nice waft. May even be a contender for SOTW

I am a Volvo-ist, but I would probably avoid the awd variants that are in your budget. They have reliability issues with the awd system.

On a positive note, my v70 (2wd) was excellent in the snow with the addition of Michelin Alpin tyres.

I'd get one of the 4 litre cherokees from the early to mid 90's. Not really any bigger than an estate car (think Volvo estate) but ridiculously capable. I loved mine and would definitely have another if I thought I could afford to keep it.

I have one too. On LPG. Still a thirsty brute but nothing has stopped it yet.

Very true, no longer looks big as modern cars seem to have swelled up in size.

Old style Subaru Justy?, if it's big enough, only being a hatch.
