I appreciate this is in the wrong forum but I'm not allowed to post in the correct one yet, due to my status as a noob here.

I drove home today and I suspect I was flashed by a camera. I checked the spot again, and saw a camera, although it was bloody well hidden. One of those infared things. I was doing an indicated 45/56 mph in a 40. My speedo is far from precise, so I estimate it to have been 43 mph, and generally keeping speed with the traffic. I basically just noticed a light shine briefly behind me and then it was gone.

I'm not looking for sympathy here, I'm looking for some answers:
1) Do cameras with no film still flash
2) I'm 19, and have been driving for exactly a year tomorow (oh the irony). will this prevent me from doing a speed awareness course to avoid points?
3) will insurers charge me more now? My premium has already gone higher for no reason other than "insurance costs are higher this year for everyone" and despite endless searching, its still far cheaper than other companies
4) What does a speed camera flash at night actually look like? Could I have just been flashed by another car, or just had another car's lights shine behind me?
5) I thought speed cameras had to be bright yellow? This one looked black, was mounted on a pole, and was hidden between trees...
6) Has anyone got a list of working speed cameras?

Sorry again for posting in the wrong forum, but this has been keeping me up..if anyone could move the thread that would be great.

For the record I'm not a boy racer. I used the car to drive my incapable dad home, and I was flashed on the way back to my place.

1) Yes
2) Not sure, does it not depend at what speed you are caught at. Also these speed awareness courses are only offered in certain counties. Unsure if age and time since test is taken into account.
3) Yes
4) Never been flashed by one during the night, once in daylight many years ago. Thankfully no points awarded.
5) No, many do have yellow fronts however its not a legal requirement. I believe if they are painted yellow then the partnership that runs the site can claim some or all operational costs from government.
6) I don’t think you will find a list, and if you did, would you trust it? A freedom of information request would tell you which ones were active in the past but that is of no use.

cheers mate. I went back just now, and I realised what had happened. An overhead street light was on the flicker, and I observed it for a moment. As I drove past the same spot, the light flicked again and it really seemed like a camera flash, although not a very bright one. I also tested the speed of the car against the sat nav-45 indicated miles per hour is in fact, 41 miles per hour on the satnav.

The fact theres a very ugly looking camera next to where it happened may be coincidence, but there aren't any marking lines on the road. Furthermore, that camera I saw wasn't on any official or non official websites I visitied, leading me to believe it is in fact a traffic camera, and the actual signposted speedcameras are further on the road, and are the bright yellow ones.

Maybe I did get caught speeding, but I'm pretty sure I didn't now. either way, I'm going to be a lot more careful in the future. lesson learnt!

You'd be in no doubt if a gatso flashed as they are bloody bright and someone flashing you is know where near as bright.
