Good advice from Simpo, mine gets knocked from time to time.
Next I'd check AF mode, then swap lenses, then consider a soft reset. If you have stored profiles (shooting mode or custom setting mode) you can back these up to a blank memory card before the reset to ensure they're saved for future use.

ks, it's not working'. 100 people are looking at you waiting for something to happen. No forums to ask or manual to read!!

Seeing as we're talking about the D300. Something slightly odd happened to mine yesterday. I'd taken about 200 shots on an 8gb memory car. Had previewed them a couple of times. Started taking a few more pics later on and noticed that the preview image was labelled as 1 of 2. I couldn't view any of the images I'd taken earlier but when I got home, they were all there as normal.

50p says the counter had got to 9999, created a new folder and put the subsequent images in it.Another user error?

Just checked the file numbers and you're 100% correct. User error again then!
Where should I send the 50p?

I discovered the 'disappearing images' trick in the middle of a wedding (sorry to keep mentioning them but there is where these things are found and hammered out) and it was a scare I didn't need. However when I got back and looked at the card with a card reader (Windows Explorer) there were the two folders, so it was easy to work out.
What's next? 'I can't set the flash to fill-flash' is a couple of steps up

The camera creates folders 100, 101, 102 etc and puts 9999 images in each so there are at least 9999 x 899 combinations. No idea what happens after that, and frankly not bovvered either!

Given a D300's shutter is rated to 200,000 actuations, does it not seem a little odd that the it doesn't have 6 continuous digits - and a screen to match?
I can and do locate files on various folders but unless I rename them I'll still have two or more files with the same name that could ultimately end up in the same place (flickr etc). Just seems a little silly to me.
I have about 200,000 photos saved so there are loads with the same file name, the only time it has been a pain is if I am shooting with two bodies and there are photos from the same shoot with the same name but in this case I sort them by the timestamp and then bulk rename the file so they have new sequential names that don't clash.
You could change the prefix from the default 'DSC' to AAA, AAB, AAC etc (I use BWC)

Changing the prefix is more wise words from Mr Simpo. I change mine to **K where ** is the decade of shutter count i'm on. Right now my most recent shot is 70K_5622:JPG. If it changes decade part-way through a shoot I change the filenames on my Mac when I get home.
FWIW the numbering of each decade starts at 0000 so there are 10,000 images in each folder.
On a similar subject, a point of note if you use profiles on the Shooting Menu. When you review the images on-camera the files appear in shooting menu order which may not correspond with chronological order.
