fuel return line weber carb

My fuel return line seems to be suckiing fuel out of carb and filter when engine hot and left for a while, say overnight.
This results in poor starting when cold in mornings or if left for a while. Fitted with 32/36 dgav on 2.1 pinto with fr31 cam and 4 branch etc. Standard mech fuel pump chucking plenty of fuel through so up to the job.
Its just when engine stopped it problem, clamped off the return when got home today and it was fine with fuel staying in carb and filter.
Do i need the return line, as i see some fords fitted with it and others not. Not injection or electric pump so dont need to bleed off pressure.
