I occasionally have the pleasure of listening to The Archers when I can't get to the radio to turn it off. What a load of slow, dull, stereotypical, vaguely farming-related drivel.

I'm led to believe that a lot of people are enthusiastic listeners, but I can't imagine why anybody would make the effort to listen to it intentionally.

That's certainly a strong defence of the programme.

ps. I don't know why people watch the misery of Eastenders, the absurdity of Coronation St, Emmerdale etc. etc. either.

I've never watched an episode of Eastenders, Coronation Street, Emmerdale etc from start to finish. I just can't see what's entertaining about them.

Same could be said of those too I suppose, been fixtures on the TV for such a long time.

Isn't Radio4 like BBC1 (tv) but for blind people? It needs to have a soap opera on there, and I wouldn't say the Archers was any more or less drivle filled than the mainstream soaps on tv.

Nothing wrong with it when you have been driving for hours. Could say the same for big brover or that dancing show people seem to like, do what I do, change channels.

Absolutely not.

Radio 4 is intellectually streets ahead of BBC 1 or any other media outlet for that matter. The Archers is a bit of an anomaly and not indicative of the bulk of Radio 4's output.

The Archers seems to be a public information programme banging on about the issue of the day. I find the acting does not ring true, I always see the characters standing around the mike reading off the script.
I started following it recently because of the E-coli plotline, as I am in the food business but I will not become aregular listener.
They have already warned the residents of Ambridge to keep their pets inside on Bonfire Night, I wouldn't bet against someone being maimed by a firework soon, with the consequences being dragged out until Christmas, resolving in time for someone to suffocate on wrapping paper/electrocute themselves on xmas lights.

Radio helps keep your mind occupied whilst leaving you able to get other things done, as my mum use to say.
The Archers has always been popular on a sunday morning whilst helping out in the kitchen, it is a bit nostalgic for me now.

People like it because its not over dramatic unrealistic sensationalist pretentious claptrap like the TV soaps, which without fail, manage to achieve in every episode.

It's a reflection of a way of village life that much of the UK population can relate to- it also has characters that much of middle england can relate to- unlike Eastenders for example......

it's also much more relevant- it brings up topics that people will discuss, it doesn't really have an axe to grind, and doesn't preach.

yes the acting can be a bit wooden, and it takes some getting used to, buti listen to it because:

a) my dog howls in tune to the theme music in a most amusing manner
b) it reminds me of my childhood!
c) i can put in on in the background and half listen to it when i'm not in the mood to listen to radio 1 or 2

Not at all. Radio is great to have on in the background whilst doing other things.

We have radios in the kitchen, living room, garage and a clock/radio in the bedroom. We listen to the Today programme, The World Tonight, Front Row, The News Quiz, Any Questions?, The News Quiz and various documentaries -More or Less is very good. I'll admit that some of the comedies can be a bit hit and miss, but there are things on Radio 4 that would never get on TV because they are too in-depth for the dumbed-down TV audience.

The irritating, wooden, stilted, dull Archers pops up at 7pm and is generally switched off unless we are in the middle of doing something -My toddler daughter does like dancing to the theme music though.

When we're not listening to R4, we're listening to the superb 6Music.

Hypothesis:

TV, is in the main, radio for people who don't do anything else with their time.

I love Radio 4, listen to it for most of the day at work and in the car, but good god do I fking hate The Archers!

I have a conditioned Pavlovian response to the theme music now, it actually makes me wince.

As a person who regrets the amount of time spent on the sofa then realises he's done nothing for two hours, I like that!
