I have a 320D 55 plate merc estate worth £9000 ish with 90K.
I am thinking of swapping it for a Toureg. We live in the country and the roads seem to get worse day by day.
Anyone done such a jump? Any advise re the toureg?
Would be loking almost like for like and a 54/05 plate Toureg D

Try an X5.

I have heard the X5 is very very poor in snow? The VW is better?
Proper appropriate tyres is the trick. The VW would be just as bad if it ran the same tyre, just get all seasons fitted to the X5 and it'll be fine

I've had several Touregs for weeks at a time (the joys of having one of the first Phaetons - it had some serious issues) anyway, The 2.5 is slow, really slow. The 4.2 is thirsty, the V10 can have some serious repair cost, but I thought the v6 derv was perfect for that car.
I always enjoyed driving them, thought they were pretty nice cars.
On the other hand, had a new X5 for 3 days about a month ago, the engine was superb, but the ride was horrible on the backroads round here. It didn't take undulations at speed well, spring/damper/tyre combo did not work well at all.
Try both I guess and see what you prefer, I drive an Alpina, so not a subtle car, but I felt like a bit of an arse driving the X5, just kept thinking to myself, why would I have this over a 535d?

Mine's a 57 reg Touareg Altitude 3.0. Lovely drive, not at all wallowy, and plenty of power (though poor fuel economy). I tried X5, RR and Volvo before getting the VW, and all were nice but this one was MUCH better value.
Well of course its better value, its a VW. Thats like saying you were going on holiday to the Maldives but Spain was better value. Not exactly news?Had my 57 plate 3.0 Tdi Altitude Touareg for 2 years now. It's great in the snow - in fact last year I was towing the Caterham in a covered trailer through snow & passed all manner of stranded mercs, BMWs, lorries etc. It's a very capable & plush car.
Economy is what you'd expect from something that big. I've averaged 27mpg in the 30000 miles i've driven, but if you drive like a vicar on the motorway 33mpg is possible. Not much fun,but possible!

Just my 2p's worth - but from what I have read, anything with a Land Rover badge seems to still spend more time in the garage being repaired than out on the road.
I rather like the Touraeg - a bit more subtle than an X5.
If you are really just after the 4x4 ability in the snow, what about something like a Volvo XC70 (the estate on stilts version), or a Subaru Legacy 4x4. Or an Audi A4 quattro estate?

As someone said up there.
In the snow it's all about the tyres rather than the car.
Any 4x4 car with winter tyres will cope with the snow on roads.
But, you mentioned the state of the roads in general.
I'm guessing potholes and ruts, so you want something to smooth out the bumps.
I'd suggest you go for some test drives.
Tuareg.
BMW X5, X3, X1
Audi Q5, Q7 (and Q3 out in January)
Merc M Class.
Range Rovers
Land Rover.
Volvo XC60 or XC90.
Toyota Land Cruiser.
I'm sure one of those will work for you.

^ ThisVolvo underrated. Audi is a fair compromise and the Subaru is a positive mountain goat!!! But the biggest thing - TYRES, TYRES and TYRES....
Wait a little while (average temp below 7 degrees C) and whack on some decent winter tyres. The difference will be night and day. And for the added unstoppable look, get some steelies with the winter tyres on...!

If you buy a 6-7 year old diesel of any sort you're dropping right into a really dodgy area with high pressure pump, injectors, glow-plug, swirl flaps and turbo issues. With the VW you've also got the VW porous head problem.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff

Am I being a bit thick here...?
