I’m thinking of buying a Touareg, the older one not the new one, I’m too cheap wink I’ve looked at a couple of different SUVs but I’d like one with decent enough performance so if you need to overtake then at least you can. I looked at a shogun sport and 17 seconds to 60 is just a no go! 3.0TDI seems ok but wouldn’t rule out the V10
I’ll be using the car over winter so I was hoping people on here would be able to answer a couple questions for me on them:

• Firstly are they reliable, ones with 80k+ on the clock?

• What’s their ride like? My Dad’s got a Cayenne GTS and that’s pretty comfy, is it like that or rock hard?

• Most importantly what are they like in the snow? I’m sure a old Defender will be better but I’d like something a bit nicer to be in. I won’t be doing serious off roading but my drive is quite steep. BMW X5 handles it no problem, on normal tyres , but my 911 Turbo won’t move!

• I’ve seen some cars are “Altitude” spec, is it worth having? Will the bigger wheels make a difference on the snow?

One of my colleagues has a 2.5 diesel and had to spend £3500 on it at an indie a while ago to change the head/injectors/glowplugs. He's had it from new and had done about 80K of mainly motorway cruising.

Cheap and cheerful I know, but forget the painfully slow 2.5TDI and go for the later (and hence more expensive) 3.0TDI which is a MUCH better engine and better on fuel and emissions! The V8s are nice, basically the Audi engine, but are not really quite up to par with the BMW engines of the same age, thirsty though. The big V10 TDI is supposed to be great and impressively quick and useful. BUT, its thirsty and uses the older TDI tech, so its quite painfully thirsty, given that diesel in this country is more expensive.

Best balance, the later 3.0TDI's with the better engine and more power. How about the Volvo XC90 with the 185 diesel? Not the fastest thing on 4 wheels, but a nice place to be.

We have a 56 plate 3.0V6 TDI Twig in the Altitude Spec with around 50k miles on it.

It is a lovely car. Returns 28 - 30mpg on a run. The Altitude spec has everything you could possible want on it (privacy glass, nav, heated front & rear seats, bigger wheels, decent body kit etc, etc). Performance from the 3.0 is more than acceptable to hustle along the road at quite a pace.

Ours hasn't got air suspension, but to be honest it rides very well indeed on the standard coils & they are one less thing to go wrong!

The propshaft centre bearing is a common fault on all large VAG (and VAG derived 4x4's, including the Cayenne). If this fails, VW want c. £2,000 to repair with a new part. However, it is an easy job to get it refurbished & costs around £300.

We had a 4.4 V8 FFRR prior to the Twig & whilst the Rangie was a beautiful place to be on long journeys, the VW isn't too far behind it in comfort. This, combined with a tighter and more controlled chassis places the VW slightly ahead of the RR overall for me - granted, it's not quite as big, but frankly we never needed the space of the RR.

We take ours off-roading occasionally over the green lanes around our village & with H & L range & proper difflocks, it is supremely capable off road & will never leave you wanting. As a winter car, it's not quite as enjoyable as our Landy S3, but that's only because I really don't worry about sticking the Landy in a ditch!!! The Twig is very acceptable in the snow, but as always, it comes down to the tyres & how you drive it.

When we bought ours, we also looked at RRS's. Personally, I prefer the look of the Touareg, as it isn't quite as shouty new money.

Overall, a great piece of kit that does everything you ask of it in great comfort and reasonable economy.

My wife has a 56 Plate 3.0Tdi - great car and can't really add to the comments above. However - we're just moving house back into a town and with a A6 Avant and a Touraeg one has to go. So if your interested let me know!

I bought a 2005 2.5 (SE Sport spec) last Oct specifically as we were heading down to the Alps for the winter. The intention was to use it for the trip and then sell it but, as I really like it, I've still got it. I'm not sure why people are saying the 2.5 is painfully slow. Granted it's a couple of seconds slower than the V6 to 60 but 11 seconds isn't painful. Overall mpg is in the low 30s.

Mine's just gone over 100k miles and, other than the rear prop shaft bearing mentioned already, it's only had routine service work. I've got a spare set of 17 inch wheels with Vred Wintracs which make it more than capable in the snow.
