You read on here of people getting the arse cos their premium went up to £54.28 etc.

I've just tried to get cheaper insurance with Flux, and even on a 2000 mile limit, big excess, kept on the drive, Thatcham etc., I don't live in a bad area for crime, have 8 zillion years no claims blah and it's still £550 quid. Confused etc all seem to be similar or more. It's on an old E38 740 worth about 3k on a good day.

Fully laid up's no good for me cos I want to sell the car and need to keep it running every week but aside from that I don't use the car (hence wanting to sell).

Any ideas?

Become a female librarian with 30 years experience of claim-free driving in your 1989 Nissan Micra, driving 2000 miles a year, living in a very rural part of Ruralshire.

And not adding your 17 yr old grandson to the insurance for (ahem) "occasional use".

Beats me, my policy renewal for myself and the missus on the was a rediculous £430. Best quote I could get too. We're both in our late 20's

Specialist insurers usually. I was with Elephant for 9 years, when my renewal arrived I thought I'd see what the competition could offer. My renewal quote from Elephant was about £600 with 8 years NCB. Tried a company that insures "classics" (if I remember correctly, anything over something like 5 years old qualifies!) and I now pay £250 on a limited mileage policy.

Also, always question the renewal quote. When I informed Elephant that I was cancelling my policy, they magically adjusted their quote to £350.

1) stop using confused.com - all the same parent company. Use the telephone and call EVERY insurance company you can find a number for.

2) if its your second car and you don't need to apply your no claims, put it on a classic policy

Any hints on the true classic insurance companies? I've tried a few and I just seem to get routed back into mainstream and the wallet rape again.

The car's a '99 if that helps.

Hagerty can be good, or Ecclesiastical seem to be able to perform minor miracles on occasion.

I've found that Flux often come through if you really push them though - they managed to wipe nearly £800 of my renewal once they finally understood my requirements.

Silly as this may sound, if I phone an insurance company, get a quote and try and play other companies off that quote...am I able to make up prices or is there some sort of database of quotes?

e.g. Could I phone 'InsuranceCompany B' and say 'InsuranceCompany A' have quoted me £xxx (made up), and see if they would match or beat it?

You can do this. I haven't done this though, obviously.

in my experience it's largely your area.

there is a website somewhere listing the risky areas, check it for yourself

not the one I was thinking of, but look on here:
http://www.motorcarinsuranceuk.co.uk/post-code-rat...

mine is E *, 100 meters down the road would be C, and half the insurance cost fkers :/

A broker actually suggested I move house. Outside of an 'M' postcode. I told him to go forth and multiply. The cheeky b#stard.

I'll bet my area has lower crime rates than the east London ghetto that he dwells in.

Sometimes they want proof of the other quote if it seems too good to be true. I have had companies start by asking what quotes I have had then saying not to bother. The problem with classic policies is it can't be your main car. I found that annoying as my policy would be £110 then not the 400 it is now.

After years of paying far too much for insurance, at about the age of 36, suddenly things dropped off the scale! Dont know why and location didnt seem to make too much difference. What did was the age though.

Jokingly went through a quote once, when I was quoted a really low number, to see how much a Lambo would be. Turned out that I could park it on the street, run it for business miles (10,000 a year) and have the wife on the insurance and it was still less than a £1k! Madness. But this was before the insurance went up over the last few years.

Biggest thing seems to be age these days.
