VW Think Blue contest.....
Discussion
Read in a mag earlier about an economy contest in Blue motion golfs in Europe that the winner made 74mpg over a 632km course. It said that some 4000 people had signed up to different elements on the competition, as there were various other environmentally aware parts to the contest.
Whilst it is an impressiive MPG result, it seems absurd to me that any recreational competition like this can be seen as anything other than bad for the environment. Quite simply, the Austrian that won it, has to travel up to Berlin for the start, then drive home. I'd suggest that no matter whihc of the gas guzzlers I was driving that day, I was more green than he was, because i did not drive 1000 odd KM on a jolly!
I remeber seeing a Prius owners club economy run, at the services on the M3 again driving for the sake of it to show how little fuel they could use, and when I spoke to them, they could just not get it that what they were doing was about as green as clubbing a seal to death with an oiled up cormarant!
I think I may write to VW and suggest that next year, the "think blue" contest should be undertaken in a virtual environment only.
