Put style aside, how is it?

Having borrowed one for 3 days (thanks Ste) I would have one in a heart beat. Even the basic 4x4 model comes with plenty of kit. Really impressive car that will no doubt sadly become a fashion accessory when away from that it is one of RR best efforts.

I suspect it's one of those cars (like the MINI) that was conceived primarily as a fashion accessory but actually turns out to be rather good, if the limitations imposed by its attempts to be stylish don't cause you a problem.

5th Gear gave it 27.5 out 30, so they obviously like it.

I don't own one.
I did test drive one.

I think once one realises it's actually a midsize hatchback car with big wheels rather than a small SUV it's perfectly fine.
Seemed to handle quite nicely, had enough power and response to be enjoyable.

But, small boot, small back seats and doors – which are expected in a midsize hatch.

Having seen the whole Evoque line up my choice would be the base model Pure 5 door with td4 150bhp diesel and 4x4 in silver. For less than £30k it's decent value and should hold a decent price too.

Value being relative of course.

Its still hard to reconcile paying £30K for what is in reality of 150BHP diesel hatchback.

It did look bloody impressive going down that 1:1 slope, I have to say.

5th Gear reviews, ah yes, very reliable for folk in the real world. For the fat end of £30k (or whatever the base price is nevermind the extras) I'd expect a car to be hitting a pretty high standard. Expect them parked all over the place as it soon takes its place as the new 'shops/school run battlebus' of choice.

Pretty much this. We were looking for a smaller 4x4 to tow the race car and the Freelander just wasn't the 'mini Range Rover' we were hoping for (when I say we, I mean her...).
We'd hoped the Evoque would be the answer, but it's just too small for a family with dogs etc. and I wouldn't be able to get all my kit in it on race weekends.

Nicely finished, drives well, looks great but just too small for us. Shame.

Someone still needs to convince me that Land Rover can build a car that doesn't fall to pieces after 12 months.

Lst time I looked they were still bottom of the league table for reliability. But maybe the Evoque will change all that.

And the last time I took a look at owners reviews of the Full Fat RR, most people couldn't sait to get rid.

I think RRs look great but there's not a chance I'd waste my cash on one. I'm very surprised they still manage to sell the things given the panning they get on the reliability front.

I see exactly what you mean but at the end of the day most cars are style/box rather than function. Most of the day I only see one person in any car driving around at low speeds in traffic.
Very true.

I think I'd be heading for an XF if I had £30k to spend.

Picked ours up last night. Its a 5 door dynamic auto diesel and cost just over £40K. Now before all you whiners jump in moaning about how much it costs I suggest you do the following first. Trot over to the BMW, Merc, Audi website and spec up a X3, Q5, 320d, A4 2.0d Quattro, C220 to the SAME Spec as the Evoque and then come back. For everyone else.

- Feels very well put together. Materials have a premium feel to them.
- Engine is smooth, quiet and pulls well
- Boot space is equivilent to a large hatch/tourer
- In dynamic spec you get pretty much everything as standard

Things I dont like so far
- Wing mirrors are HUGE to the point that they can actually hinder your visibility
- Difficult to judge where the wheels are when driving (if that makes sense) but this is something that I will get used to I'm sure.

Given the choice of any of its competitors its a no brainer, imagewise and financially. Land Rover have grossly underestimated the demand for this car and people are already being hit by delays. The dealer I bought my car from said yesterday that lead times could hit 18-24 months. If thats the case then its almost free motoring.

"I was amazed at how small its boot looks"

Was is a full-fat real Range Rover? their boots is pretty big... the whole vehicle is mahoosive so maybe it just was 'in proportion'??

Is the Evoque really a competitor for those cars though? Isn't it massively smaller inside? From what (little) I've seen, I'd put it more against things like a Golf or 1-series in terms of its usefulness for carrying stuff/people.

I'd be inclined to say it's smaller than the X3 and Q5.
But, arguably, it's still a competitor.
It's probably somewhere between the X1 and X3 in truth – so a potential buyer would probably look at all of them.
Any current buyer could probably consider the soon to be released Q3 too.

What's its towing capacity? That's the only reason I've never been able to see for buying an SUV for road use.

2 Tonnes, hence us looking at it as a tow car for the race car.

Well that's pretty decent at least, then. At least it offers something over a mid-sized hatchback. smile
