Thailand with a 6 month old - anyone done it?
Discussion
Currently weighing up where to go on holiday end of Feb, beginning of March, for a fortnight. Whilst I have been to Thailand several times, my wife has only been to Bangkok and hated it. She now wants to try one of the islands... however, we have a newborn baby who will be 6 months old when we are intending to travel, has anyone ever been to Thailand with a relatively young baby? If so, can anyone recommend a luxury resort that will be suitable? Budget is £3k(ish) for flights and accommodation.

Done it, many times.
Nobody can forecast how the child will be during the flight - that's a whole different subject.
In terms of practicalities, Phuket and Samui will be more suitable for travel with a young child IMO.
You will have branches of Boots near by and good healthcare close at hand.
The less developed islands would be slightly more of an adventure that is perhaps best saved for later years.
Obviously, direct flights from BKK will be attractive, so you can look at Phuket, Samui and Krabi. Destinations that would need a little more work to reach would be Koh Chang, Khao Lak, Phi Phi and Racha. Koh Chang is lovely, but it's a plane, bus, ferry and bus to get from Trat to your hotel. All in all, about a 2 hour transfer. It's an all in ticket, so easy enough.
In terms of resort and budget, I cant be too helpful, as we normally travel at Christmas and Easter. On that point, you will obviously get more for your money by staying away from the school hols.
Trailfinders quite often have some deals packaged up with Thai International. Flights and hotels (usually 5 nights) which you can extend - these can be cracking deals.
I can certainly suggest hotels, but you need to decide which island suits you. PM me if you want.

I live in Bangkok with a young baby, but one thing I would seriously consider after the flights is the heat. It's generally mid 20's at night, and well in the 30's during the day all year round. Air con is fine but you wouldn't want to be in it for a fortnight, as it will be dried air which will make your baby have a stuffy nose.
I would be looking more for where you could get a direct flight to rather than having to change part way through. Another point is the jet lag, when we took our baby to the UK for the first time she didn't know what day of the week it was for quite a while.
The islands are very nice, and a lot cleaner than the city that's for sure, but getting around (unless you don't mind holding the baby in the back of a tuk tuk or cab) is a ballache.
I love Thailand, and I know it's weird reading what comes across as an anti Thailand post, but I would seriously consider somewhere a little less adventurous for the first couple of years, when they can deal with the flight and the heat a little better.

How much did you take?

I'll leave that to your imagination but we managed to have a near silent 13hour flight with our 8 month old baby....Although anymore and we would probably would have had to check her into the Priory

(For anyone about to critisise our parenting, please take the above in jest)
