PS3 not charging controllers

One of our PS3's isnt charging controllers.
Im told two cables, three controllers and both USB ports have been tested.
The problem therefore isnt the cables or controllers.
Will do some googling later, im guessing/hoping its possible to buy a standalone PS3 controller charger.
Meanwhile though, has anyone experienced similar, or have any guesses as to what the problem might be, or possible cost to fix?
If it sheds any light, this PS3 dates back to, erm... around PS3 launch day, I think!

Strangely, I have a portable battery (iphone charger) which I lent GF's son, plus the iphone wall socket plug charger, neither of which worked.Can anyone else get a flashing charge light to appear on a controller with an iphone charger?
Could it be that charging is taking place, without the charge light flashing?

He has just tried this.2x controllers
2x different cables
2x different usb ports on a desktop machine... nothing. No flashing lights.
I suggested perhaps the PS3 sends a signal to the controller, to make it flash, when it is charging.
Perhaps the controllers are charging, just not flashing?

One of the controllers is less than 3 months old.
All of the controllers are official ones.
One of the controllers (the third one) is mine. I've not used it in 6 weeks, but he has (2 weeks ago).
And the third controller (the neighbours) works fine, he brought it over and it wont charge.
Was it "Live and Let die" in which the bond villan was building a bomb which would detonate and send out shockwaves which would destroy all microchips, rendering all electronics equipment was rendered useless? Perhaps someone detonated an anti-ps3 controller bomb which destroyed all local charging equipment.

There is nothing else to try, if this "fails" I'd not worry too much, he's probably pouting that he didn't know how to sort it out himself. I can't imagine that multiple pieces of hardware would simultaneously fail in the same fashion like this. I'd expect an update has knocked them all out, it happened to me once.

Whilst he has used my controller with friends (he had another, but it broke) I have not used my PS3... maybe in as long as 6 weeks, perhaps a little more, Im not sure. So, Ive not had any PS3 updates, whilst he may have. That thought made me question whether an update knocked out the recharge ability.
Back to you, what exactly did the update knock out at your end, was it also a controller charge issue?
I think the next step is to borrow more controllers from friends, and eliminate the controllers, thus saving us going out to buy a new one to try it. Totally stumped.

Why it was old man Whithers, from the Abandoned Theme Park, who said

He sabotaged the wires to make it look like a hardware fault.
Both charge cables dying (at the same time) added to the confusion.

There is a fix for this.
I had the same problem, ripped my controllers apart, had to buy another two and still the problem.
its a problem with the USB post in the PS# you need to reset your PS3 by holding it down until you get the double beep to reset the ps3, dont worry you dont loose anything, just need to reset your hdmi settings etc.
this also resets the USB port and enables the ps3 to charge the controlelrs again,
