Finally - got an E39 M5!
Discussion
Hi guys
I am the proud new owner of a facelift lemans Blue M5! And I Love it!! Picked it up last night having traded in my 530D M Sport
Just a quick questions about power delivery:
From 1500 to 3500 revs, power seems to be "average" - not as turbine like pull I was expecting. However, bury the throttle and it takes off like a scalded cat - especially above 4000rpm
I did wonder if the MAFs need cleaning or whether this is just the way the engine behaves - I am coming from a silky smooth 6 cylinder diesel with mega torque, so maybe I just need to get used to the need for more revs?
I have done the MAF test by holding revs and then pushing the sport button - there is a noticable kick in the back so I am assuming all is OK
Let me know what you guys think? I dont think there is a misfire but I was expecting a cleaner power delivery from lower revs???
Cheers
Simon

After posting exactly the same comment about my old M5 last year on here and learning how the car behaves -
A - Its a heavy old beast and even 400hp cant defy physics
B - The car needs to be in Sport mode to feel responsive
C - The fireworks happen higher in the rev range and the car only starts to feel as quick as it should above 80mph (unfortunately)
D - find a 'private road' and floor it in 4th at 80mph and the car seems to get quicker as it piles on speed.
E - If you want it to feel quick of the mark then lots of revs/clutch slippage should do the trick but will cost you in maintenance.

They are deceptively quick, Sometimes you dont realise how quick you are going until you check the speedo and think oh s
t, It may be worth getting the MAF's checked as this will definately affect the performance, I absolutely love the torqueiness from the engine you can literally pull away from a virtual standstill in 3rd or even fourth and you can literally feel the wave of torque build as the revs rise, I absolutely love mine and cannot think of anything to replace it without spending silly money, Enjoy your new beast they are magic.

Follow the instructions here and when you have test 4 up, press the right button to switch between L/100km and L/hr

At max throttle you should hit 140 and you're best off doing this in 3rd gear.
I bought another one a few months ago and they were reading 118L/hr at just over 100k.

Surprised about the non responsive pick up and the lack of feeling of pull. I am the proud new owner of a facelift lemans Blue M5! And I Love it!! Picked it up last night having traded in my 530D M Sport

Have a Bosch diognostics done, any problems will be revealed. Thankfully they are tough if well maintained.
But the E39 has an uncanny way of isolating you from all that performance, as it cossets and soothes though sheer depth of engineering.
Mine had double glazed glass, 120 felt like 70. Still perhaps the best car I have owned, doing an effortless 4000 miles in 8 days across Europe. Wonderful. The wife reading a book with cruise control set at 140, I kid you not. (I was driving).
Fond memories.

TC = OFF
Sport = ON
Grin factor = MAHOOOOSIVE!!!!
Sit back, relax and enjoy - you've just bought a corker of a car that will surprise you every day for the entire time that you own her. (She is a she by the way, treat her like a he and you'll pay the price
)
I'd get her looked at if you think she's not pulling well below 3k; they certainly fly above 4k, but she should pull cleanly from about 15-1800, with a slight "dip" at about 2500. With 6 gears, you can pootle around town in 6th at 1200, and still pull away nicely, or you can can cruise effortlessly at silly numbers all day long.
Just keep her fed on good oil and change it regularly (probably before the lights tell you to if you don't do a lot of mileage) and she'll reward you well.
Wish I still had mine - I cant think of any other car around today that I'd rather be in - big power, RWD, manual box - driving nirvana. The new auto boxes, although slick, lack the intimacy and feel that a series of neat heel'n'toe downshifts through the 'box into a roundabout provides.

It's such a linear power delivery that they are deceptive. Also the fact they're quite quiet means they're often a bit undramatic. As has been said, 80mph in 4th is where you'll know it's healthy! You just get the same push in the seat at all speeds. I reckon if you've passed the MAF test (sounds like you have) then it's probably fine. Is it due a service?
Congratulations on the new purchase......

370lb-ft peak torque is great and the curve is super flat too
but the bottom line is that they only have 215Hp per ton, and that's not in the top league anymore. Its quick but won't feel a big step up from a 530D's in gear shove; E39 M5's are stunning machines but are only slightly quicker than E46 M3s or E36 M3 EVOs tbh.

Done the secret Maf test and I am showing 139 ltr/hr so all ok!
Car pulls as I would expect when in sport mode. If not seems as though you have to boot it to get low down pick up. Is there a throttle position change when you add sport mod?
