We've always fancied going away for NYE, rather than stay at home or goto a familys for a meal etc. We went away last year, with my family and it was great (apart from the restaurant I booked, woops), but we'd like to do it alone and just go to a nice restaurant and enjoy a good meal and fireworks.

Looking at the prices of cottages and hotels, its not going to be cheap, but sod it!

So, any recommendations for a good deal and place to be merry?

it's utterly frantic so might not be your thing but St Ives does a pretty good NYE bash, loads of cottages around and always a bit warmer that most of the country as well

Very far from us, but somewhere we'd like to go.

Did you stay in a cottage and just goto a local pub?

I know it is not England, but India, Goa (9 hr flight, North beaches) to be exact has been the cheapest NYE I have ever done, Fireworks & warm sea were 1st class. (ETA to add) and cheaper than a weekend in Edinburgh.
