I am failing to understand Car Insurance..
Discussion
Firstly, apologies for a thread about car insurance. We all know it's a rip-off in this country but I am totally failing to get my head around the quotes I've been getting..
My grandad has recently stopped driving, but we are keeping his car on to take him out for trips and use very occasionally if none of the other cars are available.
It is in old, un modified Saab 9000 2.0 lpt Auto. Kept in a locked / alarmed garage. Good low key area etc.
I am 28, clean license, 7 yrs no claims and own several cars of my own included a modified Saab 9000.
I want to insure myself, my brother (over 25, clean licens, no claims etc etc) my mother (old, clean license / claims etc) and my uncle (ditto)
I want to do 3000 miles a year. The only thing to detract from the quote is that my no claims bonus is being used elsewhere.
Now - surely this has to be about the most attractive proposition an insurance under writer will get all year!?
Do you know what I'm getting quoted... between £1500 and £1700 !!!!
WTF? I seriously do not understand this.

have you tried upping the miles?
Yes - low miles seen as risk my insurers (less experince is the claim)Also garage seen as more risk than on street - as theif can "target" a garaged car
Not my theories btw - just what i have heard
Finally - and most important try classic
Could you get your grandad to be the insurer, use his no claims and the rest of you as named drivers (even though he wont be driving)? My friend has her partialy sighted husband on her policy as its cheaper, even though he cant drive as he cant see much. Insurance companies only use no claims on one car, unfair? yes.
Hope you sort it out
Hope you sort it out

As said, sounds like you need a classic car policy. No car I've ever had on one has been over £150, and I have had other drivers on it before although only one. Try Peter Best.
ETA: I don't see why all but one of your cars (whichever one you use to get to work) shouldn't be on a classic policy, unless you can't meet some of the criteria for whatever reason.

That's your problem right there.Bearing in mind a full NCD discount can be 60+ it makes a huge difference.
Call Admiral.
They will do an equivalency thing - as long as you can prove you have a NCD with another company they'll give you a quote based on you having the same NCD with them.
UK insurance is a legalised rip-off full stop!
The number of drivers cannot affect the limited mileage, so what's the excuse?
Saga, (I beleive in naming and shaming so I hope they read this!), insured my wife's new Matiz the high performance 1.0 version for a reasonable £300. A new policy on 8k miles pa. When I wanted to add my 23yr old daughter as an additional driver which with me being out of the country for a number of months, I thought was a sensible precaution, guess how much extra they wanted.
ONLY £900.00 EXTRA!!!!!!!!!
W.T.F.?
Anyone from Saga, or another insurance company care to comment?
I insure my 4x4 Freelander in Greece for Euro450 p.a. Any driver aged 23-70, no mileage limitation and they're not bothered by the 3 points on my UK licence! Also unlimited EU cover F.O.C.

£1200 isn't out of the ordinary for a 23yo's car insurance...The number of drivers cannot affect the limited mileage, so what's the excuse?

Add to the fact that SAGA are aimed toward older drivers, they probably arent that interested in young peoples business.
Just going through this myself. I am 40+ and was just quoted £1k to insure my LS400 TPF+T, and that is with four yrs no claims. I phoned them to accept the quote and they came back with a new figure of £1150.
They told me the price had gone up because i was paying for the whole year up front!! When i told them i would pay in installments they simply took the £150 back off the quote and told me not to worry about it.
It is all backwards these days. It is also cheaper for my car to be left on the road, rather than on my drive..

^ This. If it's just for emergencies, they cover any driver anyway.I'm over 50 but always find them way out on premium, but my neighbour uses them and seems to get a reasonably good deal. Go figure, as they say.

Could possibly be the number of people you are wanting on the policy.
Almost a 'pool car'.
Could be this - my wife's car was insured for me and both our kids (who are in their 20's and both have their own cars) but I had to drop one of them off a couple of years ago as no matter where I looked the premium increased dramatically for the 4th driver.Almost a 'pool car'.
My understanding is that despite charging quite steep prices, insurers are still often making a loss when they do their sums...
So you may claim insurance is a rip off, but what option do the insurers do to combat losses except put the prices up further?
It wont be long before they simply say "No under 25's or over 60's"... They are already trying to price out under 25's.

Outside of brand new drivers, or those with a big accident history, I don't know any 23 year olds who've paid anywhere near £1200 (performance cars excepted). Add to the fact that SAGA are aimed toward older drivers, they probably arent that interested in young peoples business.
Few years back now, but I didn't even have a car until I was 22. 5 years of having a licence then, no NCB, cost £600.
£1200 wouldn't be out of the ordinary for people in their teens - it's a lot for mid 20s though IME.
You're right though - SAGA probably just don't want the business.
