PS3 controller, R2 button loose

Google has proved to be pretty useless, so as usual, I have turned to the wealth of knowledge that is PH.

I have an issue with my DS3 that is driving me fking insane. The R2 button is loose. And extremely sensitive. I've had to change how I hold the controller because otherwise, it will be throwing grenades or bringing up menus or whatever every minute. It's a major annoyance for me, as I have to be very wary of how I hold the controller. It also does this on PS3 browser, which is also irritating.

If I shake the controller, it flaps about. Not hugely, but you can see and hear it. It is lower in position than the L2 button, and applying the tiniest bit of pressure will trigger the button. It also feels looser.

It's driving me fking mental!

I also don't have another one and am not paying Sony to give me another.

I'm on my 4th PS3 controller, and expecting it to die pretty soon based on the lifespan of previous ones. They are sensitive, the buttons wear out or break. Thats the way it is. I tend to find it is the analgoue sticks that go wrong first on mine.

I've never had a problem with the analogue sticks, they've always worked for me. The L2 and R2 buttons however,

Yeah but some of the money has already gone to the thieving feckers if I buy retail. Also, 30 odd quid for a controller is fking ridiculous.

It is yes but realistically, if you want to play, and play well, what choice do you have?

Im still on my first ps3 controller and its still going strong.

You can get an unoffical one of ebay for about a tenner

My 2 controllers are from the original release date and still work - one does have a tendancy to make my character move even when im not touching it. They dont even have rumble packs.

Guess ii'll have to invest next week before mw3.

DIY repair it

I had it happen on mine, it was like the most sensitive of hair triggers, not good when R2 ends up doing a move that completely exposes you in the game or sends you plummeting to your death! Here's a relatively simple fix...

Hunt around the house for an old floppy disk. Pull the cover off the magnetic material, taking care to catch the little metal spring as it comes off. Put said spring to one side. Get hold of a small screwdriver and take apart your controller pulling the two pieces apart carefully. Lift out the R2 button noting how the now crap or broken spring is set to give it tension as you press it. Trim the old floppy disk spring to size with some scissors/clippers and carefully fit back in place of the old spring as you refit the R2 button. Reassemble controller, refit screws, enjoy nicely tensioned R2 button

It can be frustrating getting the spring in place correctly, but very rewarding once you have a reusable controller back in your paws.
