Hey anyone that can be bothered reading, I'm currently looking for my first car that I actually own rather than using a parents car. I#m looking between £3000-£3500 and after doing many qoutes it looks like im not getting anything thats above insurance group 6. I did want a honda civic sport as they were insurance group 6 but I have been qouted £2500 so that looks out of the question. I have looked at astra 1.7 cdti's and focus tdci's among the other usual cars such as a corsa or clio etc. Any suggestions or reviews would be helpfull, cheers.

There are lots of cars within your price range? What other criteria do you have?

Age?
Mileage?
MPG?
Corsa and the ilk do not always give the lowest insurance prices.... fancy a classic?
Number of seats?
etc, etc....

I'm looking at 04 plate onwards really unless it's in good condition. Anything under 80,000 preferably but obviously if its a tank like diesel engine it would be higher. I dont fancy a classic for a few more years yet when I can afford to keep it in good condition.

Number of seats or doors doesn't bother me, I prefer 3 doors, but my girlfriend has 2 kids so 5 doors would be practical in that case

my mate has one they are good looking and plenty of torque but you have to take them on a run every so often

That would be my first choice, but im being quoted £3000 for the 150bhp version and around £2400 for the 120Bhp. So I would only be able to get the 1.7 cdti with 100bhp and I can see that being a tad dull and slow

Well I Don't have any No claims bonus to use, only been named driver before and the company didnt do it for named drivers. So basically it's going to be my first car, but as im 23 I can go abit better than a Corsa 1.0

If you can get one in the price range, Fiat Panda 100HP or Citroen C2 GT or Polo 1.4. That is my shortlist for my first car or i would like to get a Saxo VTR for about £1300.

Arent they all a bit obvious with regards to insurance cost?

Not sure how the image suits you but a Mini One may suit. Insurance group five and not a bad steer. Most been looked after due to Minis TLC package in early years. Did enjoy my wifes back in the day... And i now drive a clubman s. image never bothered me as they held their value and a hoot to drive.

They are even quite refined for a motorway cruise.....

Just a thought....

Thats why i suggested the mini one as the insurance should be cheaper than the cooper. The difference in power is purely down to the map (from memory) and the 90bhp is not too bad in the mini one. I have never really been into out and out power and prefer the balance and handling of motors. Our new clubman s is far quicker than the old mini one but the torque steer takes some of the delicacy away from the experiance.

Best of luck

Yeah its not there performance but more of the image thats bothered me about them. Mini one really isnt much diff in performance and like you say its down to the map.

The insurance is great on them, but Id need to find an extra £1000 to buy one and still feel they look abit like a shopping trolley/old ladies car

Why the want for a diesel? Genuine question.

You can get a lot more for your money with petrol. Could probably get a nice special edition MK1 Focus with a 1.6 or 1.8 engine. Mid 30s MPG and low running costs.

Insurance is relatively cheap, they will never set the world alight performance wise, but they will drive much better than any similar offering from GM.
