Melting Fuses!

Has anyone come up against melting fuses [not blown]? On a recent trip everything going great then the car just stopped, after some investigation with the AA man we discover that the 15amp coil and rev counter fuse has melted. New one in and the cars starts first time, is this a sign of a defective coil or something more sinister.

Its usually a sign of poor or corroded connectors in the fuse box.
Mine had a leak from the bonnet catch just above and the fusebox needed a complete clean up.

I've found that a lot of replacement fuses seem to be made from a thinner gauge metal than original items so do not clip into the holder tightly - poor connection = heat = something melts?

The fuse holders can relax with age/heat/vibration, especially if they have previously been overheated due to poor contact due to age/heat/vibration/corrosion. It isn't always easy to tell since you connect both terminals of the fuse at the same time, but if you push an ordinary spade into each side you'll probably find they're quite loose. They can be tightened up if you back them out of the housing.
