Ok, here is the scenario...

I just brought a 'new' car on saturday and within ten miles the speedo packed up....The garage said they will fix it on monday but i am concerned about a few truvelo's that i went through on roads i am unfamiliar with...

If i was speeding and mention the broken speedo, will i then get done for speeding AND a broken speedo?

Also, i have insurance but no insurance docs yet, therefore can not get a tax disc either...

So, if i got done by a truvelo, should i just shut up and pay the ticket, or do i have a defence as i am sure i would have only been a few MPH over if at all..

Quite possibly. It's certainly illegal not to have a functioning speedo.

Seems wise. Although if the ads on TV are to be believed they'll find out about the tax too. Of course, if the garage sold it to you with a new MOT, then you were bringing it home from an MOT test so you should be OK there.

and in the mean time should i leave the car at home?

Also seems wise.
Unfortunately you are without wheels for a week that way. You need to decide how likely you are to get caught for anything other than speeding.

Thats what i figured

Driving around london i have got used to seeing Gatso's and slowing down, but on saturday i was out of my usual area (between dunstable and leighton buzzards) and was faced with massive wide roads with forward facing camera's round every corner...

I have a nasty feeling i could have been done more than once

Hedders,
Leave it at home matey...Otherwise if you are anything like me, it will all happen at once....

Zapped by camera, break down, fellow bib turn up, no tax sir, any docs sir, ok then heres a cle26 and a producer....

Then your insurance gets lost in the post, and the dog eats the mot.

Then the dealer goes bust and new owner denies all knowledge...

I thought i had heard it all, but that takes the biscuit

On a side note, i got and accpeted the insurance quote over the phone. during the process i was asked if the car had an immobiliser/alarm. I didn't know so i said "no, I doubt it".

Having now found out that it DOES have them i called up the insurance co to get the policy ammended and hopefully save myself some money. The girl on the phone then tells me it will not affect my insurance at all! So WHY did they ask if i had one???

Ring your insurance company about the covernote - when i insured the bike last wednesday, Adrian Flux emailled me my covernote as a TIFF file and i just printed it out!! I was legal and riding my bike within hours of passing my test.

I would assume that should it have been stolen, and you had stated that it did have an immobiliser, and in fact it didn't, the insurance company would not pay out.

Also, a good point from Mad dave, as long as the insurance doc isn't a photo copy it is a legal document. So printing off a tiff file is exactly what the insurance company would do anyway, so you would be able to buy tax

OOhhh, good tip...TA!

added: Just called them.... "it is company policy not to email documents to anyone"

When asked why it is company policy to shy away from the most popular form of communication of the modern era they elucidated thusly

"dunno, it's just company policy"

Well that's usefull..
