The house I’m moving into in a few weeks has on old safe under the stairs, which is open, but has no key. The house used to be a vicarage and I assume the safe used to contain important documents etc. Hence it would be quite nice to keep the safe in the house as part of its history, and we could probably use it for its original purpose too.

Is it possible to make a key if there isn’t one anywhere in the house? Or am I going to have to drag the thing out and chuck it? –I foresee an ‘Any chiropractors around?’ post next if this is the case.

It is normally possible to get a lock rekeyed.

A quick call to a locksmith with the make of the safe (if known) or maybe some photos of it would be good enough for someone to give you a quote.

I'm sure if you put some pictures on here someone will know more about it.

Thanks.

I'm 300 miles away from it unfortunately, but vagueley remember a makers name on it somewhere. It's a 1950's house but I think the safe looks older.

Cause for optimism then!
