Help! My F-I-L and I are going round and round in circles, he has a 2002MY Mercedes SL500 (W230) 71k, 2006MY 4.2 Supercharged Range Rover 44k both owned from new and a (rather horrid yuck ) 2001 Toyota Rav4.
His conundrum is that the Rav is getting sheddy, the Rangie is thirsty (15.4 mpg) and the Merc is rusting furious The M-I-L does about 5k a year and the F-I-L does about 12k pa.
My thoughts are for M-I-L to drive the Rangie as it is earlier than the changes in car tax (£260 pa as registered early March 2006) and she doesn't do too many miles for the consumption to matter but big for a shopper.
Sell the Merc, we have been to Mercedes about the rust and they have verbally and formally 'shrugged' and told him to 'change the car more often' redcard We know about the Mobilo 30 yr warranty and tried that route but to no avail and frankly he is so appalled by Mercedes' reaction he wants to bin the car and never buy another Merc - so decision made on that one. We reckon on getting about £12.5k for it.
Sell (happily) the Rav byebye
But the real question is what to replace the Merc with? We all know about the recession and his budget will be about £25-30k and bear in mind he is closer to 70 than 60!
Requirements:
Reasonable economy
Not necessarily new
Doesn't have to be a cabriolet/ convertible
Four seats
Some status (yes badge snobbery is alive and kicking)

I was thinking along these lines but would welcome your considered views including whether to keep the Rangie.

You aren't going to get £12.5k for a rusty 500SL.

More like £11k on a good day IMHO.

Thanks for your opinion, the rust has been (properly) repaired and values are debatable but the question still remains......

Why the four seats?
For their 70yo friends or for the grandchildren?

If for the latter, how about an XK? Looks stunning, worthy replacement for the SL.

We both like the XK but it does still have an element of 'golf club' about it, plus still quite juicy.
Good call though!

A lexus of your choosing.

Respectable badge, world class engineering and excellent value for money.

Fair point well made! More of a Saudi run around IMHO!
Four 'proper' seats would be ideal though, combined with the consumption of the XK, rules it out.

I run a RX for the wife, excellent car but across the brand (with the exception of the IS-F) they are just a little dreary?, soulless? and while great value for money second hand, they are still lacking against prestige marques such as Audi, BMW, Jaaaaag, Merc etc.

Hmm, 30k on a new car and worried about consumption?

xk 25mpg = 2900 annual fuel bill @25mpg
635d = £1900 @ 40mpg

£1,000/yr isnt alot when you're spending 30k on a car!

Couldn't agree more especially with the total mileage, it is more psychological than real saving especially when you have just hosed another £140 into the Rangie and it doesn't even show a range of 300 miles yikes
Petrol> drink <Rangie
