My 2005 2.0D SE manual estate continues to soldier on at 132,000 miles, however...

It doesn't always happen but sometimes there's a sudden drop in power accompanied by the glow plug warning lamp flashing. I understand this means the ECU's gone into 'safe' mode, as it's detected a fault and stored the code. Upon stopping and restarting the engine it's fine again. This can happen a few times a journey or not at all. It tends to happen under acceleration.

Something else I've noticed: with the car in neutral and the engine under no load, there's a regular misfire if I try to hold the revs between 1750 and 2000 RPM, or between 2000 and 2250 RPM. It's rock steady with no misfire at exactly 2000 RPM and at all other revs.

It's been to a franchised Jaguar dealer but there are absolutely no fault codes stored. Their technician reports it might be sticking turbo vanes, but if I'm to spend money on the turbo, injection pump or injectors (all very expensive), I need a proper diagnosis first, not repair by serial substitution. I'm aware it could also be the EGR valve or even the throttle pedal. Anything cheap I can try, or any other ideas?

Try a decent independent rolling road/injectors diagnostic set up on the engine. With exhaust analysis and the full computer read outs the fault should be apparent.

You cannot fly blind with these modern eco engines in identifying faults.

Proper electronic diagnosis is the ONLY way

Or try a garage who specialises in diesels.

Hi, the problem you are experiencing is the actuator motor on the turbo! You will find that the arm is sticking in the open position. The real solution is to replace the turbo with a reconditioned unit, because the actuator is part of the assembly. The cost of that is roughly £600 + vat.

But, and a very fortunate "but", there is someone who lives very close to you, who has stock of the actuators, and is an ex Garrett development man. If you remove (or get someone to remove) the turbo, and drop it off with him, he will either repair the existing actuator, or replace it at an exceptionally good price. Call him first, because he maybe able to do the job start to finish for you. His name is Gary Picken, his no is 07837 850476, and he lives in Parbold

Unfortunately, it isn't a part you can replace yourself, because it requires synchronising when it is fitted!

Give him a call, and I'm sure he will be able to help you.
