I have just bought a newish mercedes in Latvia where I am currently living / working.

I want to take this car back to the UK with me at some point and officially import it like I have done with all my other cars.

Problem is; almost ALL the Mercedes / BMW's here have seriously tinted windows and my car is no exception. Even the windscreen is quite dark. The side windows are *very* dark.

Would I run into potential issues driving this car back like this?

I plan to remove the tints but I would rather do this in the UK rather than Latvia.

Hi Deester,
There was a thread on yesterday's board titled 'Law on Tinted Windows' that you might find interesting;

This is what I posted:
Yesterday (13:23)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's like my views on itallic plates, blue washer lights etc..If you've got heavily tinted windows I will stop you in case you have something to hide.

Disqualified drivers have been known to have dark windows and escape notice more months/years.

Also, even if you are 'road legal, but have tinted windows and you haven't noticed my police car, you might be 'human' and speed slightly. Result; stopped by the police and dealt with.

If your windows were regulation and you looked ok, I might have gone the other way. If you had then been speeding slightly, I wouldn't have been behind you..

Reason enough for not having dark windows, I think.

ALSO:
Yesterday (13:55)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I didn't say it was illegal not to want to be seen...What I did say is that it arouses the natural suspiciouns of the 'old bill' and results in possible prosecutions, if you're doing something wrong (speeding, red lights etc) because the police car will be following you.

It also means that you will be stopped more often than those without dark windows. Remember, the police don't NEED a reason to stop you. (Section 163 of the Road Traffic Act 1988)

However, if you're happy with all that...fine...come and join my in my nice warm patrol car....

Do you do requests on the video side of things? If you do, if you'd like to pop down to the local blockbuster, I'd like to pick a comedy. Also, do your seats have back massagers like the new S-class?

PS can I have a play with the lights?

If you were on duty and a black Mercedes with tinted windows and Latvian number plates passed you I'm guessing that you may be interested to find out why its in the UK!

I'll have my documents ready.

PS - I want a play with the lights too

Hi, Deester

i read from your thread that you have imported a few cars from Latvia,

have you any idea how much it would cost to export a car to Russia ( St Petersburg)

have several friends in St. Petersburg one of which is interested in a mint 850 volvo ( car would only be worth (j800) not worth it if the export fees are more than this

cheers
