Only other really good Star Trek film to feature Kirk, Spock, McCoy etc (if you can look past some of the wooden acting in parts and 'iffy' direction from Nicholas Meyer)is "The Wrath of Khan" (1982). The next Star Trek film starts filming in January 2012.

The JJ Abrams vision of Star Trek is a touch removed from the Star Trek Next Gen, DS9, Voyager & Enterprise politically 'right-on' era. I used to love that period of Star Trek but I saw a few episodes the other day on Sky and it hasn't aged well. Avoid if you don't want to spoil your new found enthusiasm!

I do quite like my Star Trek but I loved this film, I can quite imagine that a fair few people who weren't "Trekkies" would have loved it too - it's really just a good standalone sci-fi film.

It's really good, makes everything else before it look old and naff even though DS9 was great story wise and Avery Brooks is a brilliant actor. Trek was looking old when TNG ended 16-17 years ago and yet they ploughed on.

TNG was 'cutting edge' sci-fi in 1987 in both story lines and special effects. Each episode cost over $1 million dollars to make. DS9 tried to get grittier and Voyager was just group hugs all round with some Borg thrown in when things got stale... Enterprise was one trip back to the well too far!

I wasn't overly keen on first watching, but on second viewing I really enjoyed it. The 'alternate timeline' thing could open up a lot of doors, and I'm looking forward to the sequel.

As to decent Star Trek movies. The original, Wrath of Khan, the Undiscovered country, and First contact were pretty good, I thought.

I agree during its run it looked good, but it didn't really change much towards the end of the 1990's visually.

As a slightly related side note, TNG is being fettled into 1080p. However, they have an issue. The live action stuff is all set to go. No problem there, but the special effects were only shot in SD, so they are having to redo the entire lot.

What got me is how well they cast the 'younger' crew, spock was superb.
I'm hoping there will be more.

Fine movie however:

Kirk boss eyed?
Chekov, you need how many years in the academy and a 17 year old is the navigation officer did he join at 12?
Spock, fantastic.
Scotty, was he on drugs?
McCoy, fantastic.

As I say fine movie though hehe

I'm a life long fan (of Star Trek and all Sci-Fi) and always found the various series more accessible than Star Wars.

The 2009 film was great and I'm looking forward to the next one. Really stood out along side the latest Batman films as an excellent way to reboot something.

If it's like the Original series re-shoots of the special effects they did a couple of years back, it'll be worth watching (they can skip the first 3 seasons and jump straight in with 'The Best of Both Worlds' - I am Locutus of Borg - Resistance is futile..)

I happened to watch this again yesterday and I got to thinking Pegg trying to do Scottish gave Scotty elements of Spud (Trainspotting). So that led to wondering what we'd have got if they just cast Ewen Bremner and asked him to do Spud in space!

I loved the movie, but had two issues, first Scotty just did not work and second the very factory like interior of the Enterprise (Actually filmed in a brewery) just did not gel. Apart from that it was great. Spock and McCoy were played very well and I loved the fact that Spock was giving Uhura a good seeing too biggrin

I thought Pegg was good as Scotty, the previous actor James Doohan who has been dead now for years was so good at the accent that I didn't realise he was Canadian!

I like this film. I thought Urban did a great McCoy, nailed the mannerisms etc but made it his own character. Plus I thought the scrit made the friendship between him and Kirk pretty plausible.

Spock chap from heroes was excellent but heard he wasn't going to be in the new one.

Mostly I thought the fact that thye were happy to mess about with the taboos was pretty good too. So no planet Vulcan anymore as one example.

The new Star Trek is such an ace film, never get tired of watching it on Blu-Ray!

Yes, it's got a few continuity errors in it, but nothing the average viewer would see, bar a die hard trekkie (trekker?).

Really looking forward to the next installment!

Remember... From the death of Kirks father onwards, it is an entirely new timeline. After that point, it doesn't have to apply to the previous Star Trek timelines.

Great film, actually a good Sci Fi movie in its own right. Even non Trekkies like it.
