Hi all,

Ive been offered a Micron race can for my motorbike. Ive trial fitted it and it sounds very nice - but its not really all that loud, so i'm probably going to buy it off of the guy. I've heard that race cans on road bikes are pretty common practise, but im just wondering, whats the likelihood of getting pulled if i'm considerate around villages and like?

Also, whats the penalty if I do get stopped? Is it just a producer, or am i looking at an endorsable offence?

BTW the bike is otherwise standard, with regulation size number plate and indicators etc.

Cheers

Dave

Race Cans..

Don't bother...more trouble than they're worth...

You're looking at non-endorsable fixed penalty £30 fine, VDRS (vehicle defect rectification scheme), possible court appearance, in some cases.

Also, some insurance companies will state that you are not covered as part of the machine is designed 'NOT FOR ROAD USE' as it will no doubt say on the end of the can.

It's also noisy and give us other bikers a bad name. (I've a CBR1100xxBlackbird)

In addition, my old favourite of; What if I've heard your exhaust and follow you intending to either give you a VDRS or even just friendly advice. However, you don't see my in your mirrors (views of your elbows only) and you take it over the speed limit or commit some other offence. Result: Policecar behind you; points, fined, etc.. If your bike was 'legal' without the noisy race exhaust, I might have gone in the other direction, not needing to stop you. Then if you had been speeding or been 'naughty' in some other way, there isn't a policecar sat behind you.

Too much hassle, race cans..Leave 'em off..

Nice bike you've got there Streetcop. I've got a '99 Blade which I love. Must admit though, that a 'Bird would be my next upgrade. ( Comfort, power etc ).I agree with what you say about cans though. For the life of me, I can't understand the attraction of these-a couple of bhp extra ( and a f****d up midrange ) and attention from your good selves. To me, if you want more poke, trade up, don't waste your money on these posing pipes.

Super quiet zorst on my zed. If you're gonna "make progress", no point in attracting attention to yourself. The only problem I have with my exhaust, is it's so quiet people don't here me pootling through my local town, and step straight out in front of me .

philthy..

Some guy did that to me the other day on my bike...

First time it's really happened ever....I managed to avoid him as he jumped back as I sounded my horn..

No matter how weak and pathetic the horn sounds on a motorbike...Beep the bloody thing whenever you feel threatened.

It's better that a motorist or pedestrian thinks, 'what the bloody hell is that biker beeping at? Tosser!' At least they've seen you then!

I see you're a ZZR1100 rider..I had one of them..Loved it..traded it in for a BMW R1100RS to tour Europe on with a load of other coppers. (They were on their own bikes ). Traded Beemer on for the Blackbird a few months ago..Love the thing..awesome..

Ride safe mate..

Ahem.......it's only a 600, I'd wet my pants on an 1100 . Thanks for the "ride safely" Gary, I do! have to be very aware of whats going on around you down in south Devon during the tourist season. I drive trucks for a living, so consequently get to see motoring from each end of the equation ie 12 feet in the air and indestructable, to two wheels, and potential road pizza.
Looking at your new posts, it's nice to see another sensible cop on the board. I've not been long on here myself, but found it very useful......welcome

Thanks for the compliment and the welcome Phil...

A few members have tried to bait me, but my teddies and toys are firmly in the pram at this time...

As long as I don't get too pisses off and think 'Sod this for a game of soldiers', I will hang around, to help, assist and advise you Pistonheads along with my other BiB brothers..

I've posted quite a bit on some other threads which you might find of interest Phil

And I thought getting windscreen washer in my face was bad enough

Totally agree. Makes a nice change from certain other (now thankfully departed) tos*ers from various law enforcement agencies coming on with a "holier than thou" attitude...

Thanks mate...

However, I'm not perfect in the slightest and have black and white police chequers running through my blood. However, I'm generally fair and sometimes a little firm at times with drivers. You have to be, or else people would take the piss and the innocent law abiding members of the public would suffer.

What I will say about speeding is this; There are 100's of letters and phone calls everyday to my police station from angry householders, parents, pedestrians, cyclists and even motorists crying out for MORE SPEED CAMERAS on their particular stretch of road due to excessive speeding.

Comments of "You never do anything about them bloody cars speeding past my house every day at various times, do you? If a child gets killed, it'll be YOUR fault Constable." etc on one telephone call.

No sooner have I put the phone then it rings again, this time; "I've just been flashed by a bloody Gatso camera on suchastreet, pity you were there when my Koi Carp were stolen!" etc etc.

You can win, you really can't!

I'll have a look.......is it anything to do with absolving "professional" drivers of any crime
As it goes, I'm getting sick of the HGV game, every time you come off a motorway it seems like you're up for grabs. ZZR600.....no points.......FH12.460 restricted to 85 Kmh three points. Something else is in the pipeline, where my speed is dictated by the broadband connection I have........yippee, no more stuck on the M5 southbound on Friday afternoon.

Streetcop.
People will not always agree with you, and that's fine. What we appreciate is honesty, and carefully thought out /researched material. What we don't like is as has been said, holier than thou attitude. As an example, just got this reply back from local scameraship
"In a sense would it not be easier to limit the speed vehicles are capable of travelling? You say yourself it is tricky to stick to 70mph on a 900 cc bike, which begs the question why are you allowed to buy a road legal bike capable of 150 - 200mph? "

Being a biker yourself, what are your views on this statement. This guy says you shouldn't be allowed to buy one. Comments.........

We don't live in a Communist country so bikes and cars that can exceed 150mph are the norm nowadays..

It's like banning knives in case somebody stabs someone with one...

A lot of SCP personnel are civilians who have never been in the police, nor ever will, so always bear in mind who the statements might come from at times..

As for people disagreeing with me on here..no probs...What I don't like is the 'go out catching burglars instead' or 'institutionalised racisim in the police' and all that sort of crap. I'm a constable on the roads/streets from a working class background. I'm not a big gaffer, nor do I work in the cabinet, so policy decisions are not my department, nor are my force's target, priorities or objectives.

Thanks for your comments Streetcop - worth a ponder methinks!

Does anyone else have any comments on the exhaust issue?

I've really been having the same thoughts myself.

I've a Multistrada, which is a pretty quiet bike, unless in neutral and the number of people who step out on you, or pull out on you, even though the bike is bright red and with the dipped beam on, is worrying.

For a while, I have thought about a louder can but haven't progressed this partly because I don't want to attract unwanted attention from the BiB and also because I don't want to annoy the public.

I love the bike but would like people to know that I'm there, when filtering or making progress through traffic.

Depite having the dipped beam on, or full beam when filtering in dual lane traffic, we still seem invisible to many.

- and the horn's about as loud as a wasp's fart

I am a firm believer in the principle that none of us can fully understand what another persons job is really like until they try it for themselves, on a day to day basis.Bit like child rearing. We all find that the very things we were accusing our parents of, we are doing to our own children.Keep a level head mate and dont get wound up by comments here. Still think you guys do a good job by and large. You don't always get it right, but then who does?

The main reason i want it is so that people hear me - my Bandit sounds like a sewing machine and some dozy cow nearly knocked me off the day of my test - she just changed lanes and nearly drove into me - luckily i was already watching her, so i just throttled it to get out of the way!
