Just been to see a golf 1.9tdi 2004.

95k on clock and wasn't too bad for the price.

Only big concern was the service gap. Just over 2 yrs 35k >75k.

That's a big gap even for a diesel engine on long life isn't it?

More recently it's had fresh tyres, cambelt another service etc. But I can't help thinking that someone owned it in the middle who didn't give a toss. -_-

There are 100's of these on the Market, no reason to buy something that hasn't been cared for.

Maybe it was serviced by the owner? Bit of DIY. I do this, but keep the receipts for every part fitted and write the mileage and date on them.

40k between a service? Clearly the owner didn't care about the car enough to service it. What else has he neglected is what i would be asking. I hate cars that have had longlife services done at 20k. I service every 10k, but 40k is just taking the piss.

Walk away and buy yourself a cheaper and better car, the underdog: Bora.

Is it cheaper than the rest? Is it in good condition otherwise? If so id still take it.

Sounds like you have your doubts though so walk away.

Vectra diesel is still going well at 160,000 miles with 20K services. But the point is it was serviced. Conversely my MR2 was serviced every time the rear tyres wore out, which was about every 8 to 10 weeks of normal use.

Modern oil is pretty good but if they felt 30K services were OK the manufacturer would have said so. Lots of used cars around that have been properly serviced so I would chose one of those instead.

That is way too long for servicing IMO. Walk away there are plenty of good used Golf's on the market.

Personally I would avoid it, plenty about with more history.

DIY servicing wouldn't put me off a car either, as long there is receipts to back it up. Probably better cared for than one with full history thats never checked between services.

Found one that is meant to be perfect. 114k though but serviced every 8000miles, cambelt done, full respray etc. Might take a look even though it's quite a drive.

If not I'm going to have just be dull and buy a sensible/dull mundano

Why would it have a full respray? It's a modern car so rust shouldn't have affected it and if well looked after even stone chips shouldn't be that bad. Check for panel gaps and accident damage if I were you.

Mondeo more dull than a Golf? I'd say they where level pegging at the very worst.

How many round town journeys do HGVs do?
How many cars spend all day every day on the motorway doing constant speed, with the engine etc fully up to temperature?
What are the relative build strengths of the engines powertrains (design life)?

It is a very different usage cycle.
