Nissan X-Trail Diesel 2.2 - how do they drive

Might be buying a 2004 X-Trail Diesel manual for a friend, does anyone have any experience of driving the 2.2 diesel?
As diesels go are these quite smooth or rough and noisy?
Anyone towed with one?
What are they like on the motorway?
I have previously had one X-Trail which was an 02 petrol / auto model which was ok round local roads but was awfull to drive on the motorway as the gearing was all wrong.
