I've just caught wind of this game and it sounds quite interesting. Available next year and includes cross platform play. What is interesting is that its available on consoles, as a downloadable game.

I used to play so much counter strike, I'm wondering how great this will be on consoles.

I have to admit that this game doesn't impress me one bit! Looks soooo dated.

I've gotta agree with this. I absolutely loved CounterStrike when it was 'out there' as it was the only game of its kind that was that good online. This however, looks like a slightly polished version of the original, and as much fun as the original was, I don't think it can compete with the level of realism that you can now get from the Battlefield series, or even other titles that aren't so closely linked.

Realism is no substitute for slick gameplay and this is were the CS games have always shone. Its the same for the MMO genre. Developers continue to try and make the characters and environment more realistic yet Blizzard continue to dominate with their disney MMO because the gameplay is better.

Talking as a fan of CounterStrike, I don't believe you're talking about the same game IMO. Fun, frag-tastic times they may have been, but slick gameplay it wasn't, for me anyway. I don't doubt that it will still be a good title when released and rekindle some past evenings spent shooting the crap out of others, but I think it may struggle heavily in a time when FPS games are at their peak and there are a number of them to choose from..

I don't agree.

CounterStrike still has the core concept absolutely nailed. Modern shooters rely too much on the 'clusterfvck' combat and massive explosions. CS was (is) far more subtle and tactical, listening for footsteps and gunfire, everyone on the same level.

I don't think it'll sell well though, for that exact reason. People want the nukes, the RPGs, to detonate buildings and roll around in tanks...and will the ADHD lot be able to cope with waiting for up to 5 minutes for a respawn?? wink

I love counter-strike, I play source pretty relentlessly and have been playing on and off since CS 1.5.

My problem with GO is firstly, if they actually feature cross platform competitive play, they're going to have to give the console gamers some advantage otherwise they'll be annihilated by the PC gamers.

I don't think they'll do this, personally. It'll be PC vs PC and console vs console, no cross there.

Secondly, they're modifying and updating an engine that's getting close to 10 years old which is fair enough, they have the engine made they should modify it to save money, but I don't see the savings being passed onto the consumers. They're going to want £40-50 for this on consoles and £30 on PC most likely and I don't want to pay more than £15 because they have not developed a new engine for it.

Thirdly, Molotov cocktails? Really? This will end up being another thing needing restriction (like AWPs on the servers I prefer) because they're not going to benefit play, just make it stupid. Also I don't see molotov cocktails thrown at the ground being a serious deterrent to running across the ground for a terrorist or counter-terrorist in reality, nor would it be all that likely to hurt someone. The footware of the characters cs is supposed to represent is probably pretty industrial and would be able to cope with a thin layer of fire pretty easily.

We'll see what happens, I don't have high hopes though.

I would be interested to see what this is like, after such a long time. It certainly kept me busy most evenings in my early teens. Does anyone know if they are planning to replicate the feature for users to customise and develop their own maps still? Obviously this is going to be very difficult, if not impossible to implement on console, but PC users may still be able to try their hand at creating some interesting maps..

to be fair i think thats what kept the series going. every time you found a decent server you'd find crazy maps. like the borrowers one for example. WTF... but it was fun!

I wore a smooth patch on the worktop from my wrist being attached to my mouse playing that game. Still there to this day!

thumbup

There was nothing more tense than being one on one with someone in a 20 man game and then suddenly hearing "The bomb has been planted" or the tip toeing around looking for said bomb prior to planting it. I for one will be giving it a go.

the modding/map community is very much what kept counter-strike alive. "vanilla" or standard counterstrike servers don't exist too much these days beyond scrim and servers people train for scrims in, I'd say the majority of servers now are fixed map servers with mods or gungame/deathmatch servers.

The fact CS was always so open and accessible allowed people to develop new fun modes for it and that's kept the players around, there are even outlandish modes like jailbreak and zombiemod, it really is the most expansive FPS to date. I think and hope the new CS will be similarly open, at least on PC otherwise they'll be shooting themselves in the foot because I don't see it competing with CoD on consoles adequately.

I used to love playing Source and would probably still be playing it if my PC wasn't fked.

The thing that kept CS:S so fresh and enjoyable for me were the custom maps and game modes. Some of the user created fun maps were brilliant and challenging at the same time, and some of the standard custom maps looked better than the maps the game was shipped with.

Gun game and zombie mod were also great. I could literally spend hours playing on a 64 player zombie server. Its no wonder that COD have followed suit but their version is nothing compared to CS:S.
Trying to get that bloody nade kill on Gun Game was great, unless you got stabbed trying to do it!

I heard on the Xbox it was going to be an Arcade title, meaning it should be cheaper. I'm expecting 1200msp.

Considering how much valve charge for TF2 hats and items, I seriously doubt it'll be under £30 even as a download only. Also remember, it's not like some small XBLA game, it'll be around 7-8GB at least since that's what CSS sucks up on it's own.
