I'm going to have to make the decision shortly as to whether I pay voluntary NI contributions or not.

My current retirement year is circa 2050, and I'm not sure whether I will have the 30 years of contributions by that date - depending on where I choose to live/work longer term.

I always believed that by the time I come to retire, not only will the official age be 90, but there will be no state pension of note, no NHS, and we may well be ruled by Apes or live on the Moon.

Class 3 contributions will cost around £625/year (but set to rise), so not a lot in the scheme of things, but I'd rather not chuck 30 x £150 = £18,750 away on paying for the lifestyle of the feckless if I will get no return.

Anyone else faced a similar choice?

You are asking whether you should pay a voluntary tax?

In return for a vague promise from a government that can change the rules at any time and has considerable financial difficulties of its own?

If so I have some marvelous Florida swamp beachfront property that I can sell you!
