Hi! Driving from Upminster to Edinburgh tomorrow setting off about 8am. Google maps offers three routes: M11/A1 or M25/M1/M6 or M25/M1/A1. Any idea which is best - it says they're about the same time but I wondered which route was likely to attract the least traffic?

Thanks

The first one i'd say.Lots of roadworks on the other routes, although i'd be tempted to start earlier or later.

A1 is lovely up past Newcastle, but it goes single carriageway north of the border, and curves round the coast. Not much room to overtake.

If you go up the M6, you'd have to come back across the M8, which can be and usually is fairly awful.

There's some lovely driving roads if you fancy a cross country blat from Lanark to Peebles and up to Edinburgh from there.

Also, the A68 off the A1 at Newcastle goes in a straighter line than the A1 itself, and is fairly interesting in places.

Had to do pretty much the same journey couple of months ago but from Brentwood to Livingstone.

Went M11 A1 but went Sunday afternoon took 5 and a half hours.

I drive London-Edinburgh-London regularly the best route for a quick journey is M40/M6/M74/A702 via Biggar to Edinburgh. Probably not worth going to M40 from where you are may as well go M1 to M6, but M40 so much nicer trip than M1.
