Been riding a slick 700cx28 Continental Gator Hardshell for the past year. My other buddies ride 26" "compromise" tyres (a bit spuddy but a continuous bead for road riding). I've not had a single puncture which is probably a testament to the Hardshell design. There has only been 2 or 3 punctures in total across the group. In fact, in the 5 months prior to my switching to the Conti Hardshells, I was on Maxxis which were thin and didn't have any puncture resistance, and I never holed them.

However, new bike riding on Mountain King folders and I've had two punctures in two rides. I admit, when I took the first one off, I was amazed at how thin they felt. Are they all like that?

Continental does a puncture resistance version of the Mountain King but at 35 quid each, I am reluctant.

Question: Are MTB tyres more prone to punctures than roadies?

It's not the tyres, it's the terrain biggrin

It's likely terrain lower pressures and bad luck, you are on a mountain bike Slime or similar is your answer. That and carry spare tubes at least 1 ideally 2 or more as if you puncture the front then you may well have ridden over it with the rear.

At the moment I'm riding the same route on my MTB as I did on the city-bike. It's mostly paved with some gravel stretches. I've only been out to play with my son at the moment. We're going somewhere more exciting in a couple of weeks.

Two lots of thorns - one yesterday and one today. The tyres feel no more resistant to thorns than a balloon.

Not sure what the ProTect version of the Mountain Kings offers. Some suggest it's additional sidewall protection.
