New Boiler Needed
Discussion
My "Potterton Flamingo II RS40" boiler in my Northampton house is finally giving up the ghost and needs to be replaced. Can't relocate it or make any major changes, so I need a kitchen cupboard sized boiler for an open vented system with a hot water tank (ie. combi boiler is a no no).
Plumber matey says 12kW boiler will be equivalent, and go to 15kW if we feel we want a bit more headroom (current boiler is something like 40,000BTUs and has been fine). He suggests Ideal as they come with a 5 year guarantee whereas others are only 2 years. Hoever a quick Google does not show very positive reviews for Ideal.
Can any PH plumbers / CH experts recommend a suitable replacement boiler?

Funny you should mention 'ideal' had my plumber round yesterday to swap some rads over for me, told him that next year were planning on re doing the kitchen which will mean the boiler is getting moving and were planning on changing to a combi. He said he d told all his customers to buy one of the ideal range as the warranty is 5 years and in his words "there a good unit" needless to say Ms 400's eyes lit up because she would believe anything anyone tells her sometimes. i on ther other hand prefer to hear more than one view on almost everything.

Although I have an Ideal Elan and at 23 years old it's still working fine. But I expect they don't make 'em like that any more...Simpo Two said:

Make sure you go into that with your eyes wide open. Combi boilers are poor at supplying good flowrates and struggle with more than one open outlet. They also leave you with no hot water back-up should the boiler fail and are less reliable than non-combi boilers.+1, I don't like combi's, it seems that plumbers prefer to fit them, which makes me a little suspicious. Unless you need the space in your airing cupboard there's a lot to be said for a well lagged cylinder with the backup of an immersion heater. And if you want a pumped shower, you must have the tank.
Most people I asked said Worcester Bosch or Vaillant, I ended up with the latter and it's great. I've no idea if Ideal still make good ones.

Can the Remeha Avanta proponents put forward some pros / cons ?
We used to fit bosch, but had too many issues. Been fitting the Remeha boilers for 4 years, I reckon, never had a problem...at all. Neat, tidy, very well made. Our plumber tells me he's had Vaillants with leaks from new...OK and if I get one of those, is it compatible with a Carlos Fandango replacement room thermostat? eg. http://www.honeywelluk.com/products/Programmable-T...

Interestingly plumber said "what on earth do you want one of those for" when I asked him to get a Remeha and the wholesaler (PTS) said the same thing. They are on 3 day order because "no one ever fits them - think that says it all"

Like everything, commission plays a big part in recommendations. Accredited plumbing installers get extra margins/incentives if they install more than a certain number of boilers per quarter or whatever.
WB installers will knock everything but WB, etc, etc.

Well you have to laugh... they don't fit them 'cos their heads are stuck up their arses.
Take a look on these threads..it's always Worcester Bosch this and Vaillant that... Two makes that have dropped off substantially in quality. Meanwhile dirkgently, possibly THE most reliable plumber on PH, has made his point above. My own plumber will fit nothing else and we have NEVER had a problem with one.
