I've not bothered watching the Japanese nor Indian races live this season (far more interesting things to do like sleep), so I've recorded them and watched them later in the day.

First problem.
Can't check emails, Twitter nor facebook. Can't use the iPad because the F1 app will push the results to it. Bit of a problem when your business is the internet.

Second problem.
No live timing - you simply don't get enough information on screen. And of course you don't get the PH banter.

Third problem
It's much easier to watch the race on fast forward. Basically the races are pretty boring. and without the interaction of live timing, twitter feeds, team telementry, there's not much to keep you in front of the TV for 2hrs.

All this doesn't bode well for next year.
It's totally pointless for the BBC to show time delayed races. There's no possible way you can avoid seeing a result in our connected world.

Thats handy, because BBC will not be showing time delayed races, highlights only.

Same difference - no point in seeing highlights when you know the result already.
Has to be said the pre and post race shows have often been more interesting than the actual race.

Are you so lacking in self control that you cannot resist playing with some apparatus or other for a couple of hours?

Does your business involve you working on Sunday?

I watch the MotoGP on Eurosport rather than BBC. It's time delayed by an hour it's not a problem in the main. I just do something else between Moto2 and GP

Obviously, didn't see Marco's crash live and the aftermath because ES decided not to show anything. Which is undersandable.

Yes Eric I'm run an agency, so monitor email and our FB clients for any issues. But that's not really my point. I'm just saying it's pointless the BBC showing highlights of the races next year.

I expect a similar strategy will be maintained by the BBC if anything of a similar nature, God forbid, happens during the 2012 F1 season.

I raised this point on the Sky thread - but even though such events are terrible to witness, they can be seminal moments in the history and evolution of motorsport. Everyone who saw Senna's crash will remember that day forever. With Sky broadcasting to expected much smaller audiences compared to terrestrial channels - and the BBC effectively censoring awful events when showing reruns or highlights - I expect that such dramatic and tragic events will not have anything like the same impact as they might have had.

Of course it's not. Everybody isn't a slave to the internet (whether a willing slave or a forced slave - like you seem to be). Many people will be happy to watch highlights. Me for a start.

He sounds like a bit of a half-fan to be honest. Wonder if he'd watch football in fast-forward too? That's pretty boring at 1x speed.

Not a problem. Watched most of the races in the evening when my daughter was growing up..you make a mistake a few times by going shopping and walking into Currys but you only do it once. The only problem was picking my Mum up for a late lunch and she would get Ian the car and say "Senna won again then". Bless her!

I managed it quite well with the Korean GP (although to be fair I was travelling back from Italy at the time), but you do have to be VERY careful as to which websites you visit, and must avoid news programmes for abput 24 hours after the race.

To be fair no-one really knows what format these "highlights" are going to take. They could be a 5 minute overview of qualifying, the full race distance (minus any red flag incidents or long safety car scenarios), then a 15 minute wrap-up at the end. Alternatively, it may be that the programme will be exactly the same as the ones currently shown on BBC3 at 7 O'clock.

The teams were told that the BBC have the full race distance available to them, and Bernie confirmed it in various interviews. However, it seems to be Bernie that is pushing for an hour long highlights package, presumably so as to not ps off his new best friends at Sky.

However, until the BBC announce what format the highlights programme is to take, it is pure speculation as to how they will be shown.

The ipad live timing app can actually run live timing in 'delay' mode, so you can use it with a delayed recorded race.

I agree though, it's hard work not using the internet in period between it's live broadcast and the time you get to watch it, for the exact same reasons as you.

I'm quite happy to watch highlights / flick through on iPlayer later in the day. 90% of 90% of F1 races are completely dull with no real action happening, so why waste 90 minutes when you can condense it to 20 / 30 mins of interesting stuff.

Personally I am with whoever it is. Whilst I have watched F1 for years, been to numerous races (pre family) if I miss a race these days I dont watch the replay of highlights. This is because I never realised there were highlights this season! As a result I have got used to just finding out the result on the net or whatever. The outcome is that next year I'll just watch the live races on the BBC and give the rest a miss.

Fourth Problem
Can have the telly on - as all news channels, unlike with football results, will start their sentence with 'Vettle/jenson/hamilton... won the grand prix today'
rather than 'and now in sport news, which if you dont want to know please turn the volume down for a moment' which they regulary do for the footy results.

Do you have a source for that? Half the things I read say highlights only and the other half say a delayed full repeat. Would be nice to have confirmation of which is true.

Shrugs shoulders. Even if I know the result, it's how it happened that I'm interested in.

Sure there is. I've often found myself watching time delayed races over the past few years. If an F1 weekend clashes with my own racing, then I don't get to watch the F1 race live, and have to wait until I'm back from the track. So long as you avoid televisions (motorway services are particularly hazardous there!) and email, facebook etc. until you've watched the race, you're fine. It takes a bit of discipline, but that's all. It's not hard.
