The wifes 52 plate Volvo V40 has just failed the MOT dismally on rusty brake pipes front to rear. The rest of it is not pristine either!


Anyway, no doubt this is partly down to the amount of salt used on our roads so I was wondering will the art of Waxoyling/Ziebarting your car come back into fashion?


I've owned a few classics & some minty clean gems from Japan that were mint cars when I bought them & a few years down the line many of them still are. Thanks no doubt to the lovely stuff this protective wax is. My 1990 landcruiser was teated when it first came into the country & its almost as good as new still.


Anyone else think this might be a good idea even on newer cars that from the outside seem not be rusty but having a look underneath at all the other components & you might think twice.

No. Bilt hamber dynax UB is the way forward wink

on another note, brand new cars on sale today shouldn't need this treatment to be honest. the arches aren't just metal + paint, the underside often has an undertray which stops water getting to the undercarriage etc.

having said all that, it certainly wouldn't harm. things like brake lines etc will corrode, buy stainless if you're worried. but certain components you probably shouldn't underseal and just replace when needed.

a little bit of corrosion here and there isn't an issue, it's whether it can spread and cause any structural issue which is another matter; which is a whole lot rarer on cars these days.

edit - the key do rust-proofing is the prep. there is no point slapping loads of underseal on a reasonably dirty surface, it won't bond properly. you need to thoroughly degrease and clean the underside first.

My MR2 Turbo has been undersealed and Waxoyled since it's arrival in the UK. I plan to continue with that tradition.

so many products out there it can be quite confusing!

i sprayed my front arches with underseal/stonechip paint that has some waxoyl in it last week, just need to do the rest of the car.

are there any guides out there that show what you need, how to do it etc?

just thought i'd ask here as not really worth starting another thread.

trust me, brilliant stuff. to remove rust use the deox-gel after removing loose bits with wire brush. once that's done it's job remove it and dry. then use electrox paint if you want (not strictly needed but does give added benefit) and then get some dynax UB.

ive done two cars.

after each car ive sworn ill never do it again. absolutely horrible messy job!

My Astra was undersealed brand new. Result is bodywork that's pretty shabby on the outside, but the undercarriage is absolutely mint. When I had a smack and needed a small repair to the chassis leg getting the stuff off was a bh though laugh

what was the old school thing? Ziebart? Zieabart? something like that. My old Honda had it done.
