Looking at swapping my hard drive between 2 xboxes so that I can play when I am away at work and at home to save dragging my whole xbox along etc.

Will I be able to do this? Also will I be able to play online and use the same DLC etc?

If its the old xbox with the hard drive on the top, then yes its as easy as just swapping it over each time.

If its the new shaped xbox with the internal hard drive, then youd probably have to rip it appart...

Bugger that could cause a problem then as one would be old and one new style.

You just lift the top panel, and slide it out on the newer models. Actually looks a little easier to do than on the older ones, I always found it a little fiddly to line it back up when clipping it back on, although I do have fingers of the sausage variety.

Not possible to swap the physical hard drive but I'm not sure if Microsoft can send you a "one use"data transfer cable. If you ring them I think they will send it to you for free. But get it right FIRST time otherwise you will loose ALL data yikes

If they were both 'old style' then it would 100% work just fine.

Buy another old one off ebay?

I never thought of that. I take it it won't have the same issues as a PS3 off a USB as you can't play certain saved games off usb on the PS3 that it didn't get started on as I tried this with GT5 and failed as I wanted to play when away from home without taking the PS3 with me.

If that is the case, there is a cable you can buy (ive got one in my desk somewhere...) that you plug your old hard drive into, and connect to your pc. You then transfer all your saved data onto you pc.
Then you hool up your pc to your new xbox, and trasfer over. Its a complete ball ache, and easier to just use a usb stick to move the saved data.

I know about the transferring which isn't a worry. Just want to play on 2 xboxs so I don't have to bother taking whole box with me all the time.

Looking on xbox site and can use USB for my profile just not sure about dlc usage and live for playin etc.

If thats the case, then just redownload the DLC etc at each xbox, you can download it as many times as you like, the being able to use it is linked to your profile.
