Hi, my turbo is making a whistling noise which my uncle reckons is the bearings in the turbo so its probably a good time to consider an upgrade.

I dont want a laggy turbo but it would be nice to have the potential for maybe 300-320bhp even if I`m not going for that straight away.

So which turbo would suit my requirements and also what supporting mods would I need to get over 300bhp?

The car is an impreza RB5 with ppp, but i really do not want a front mount intercooler and do not want to change from the prodrive exhaust system, I basically want the chance of a bit more power but still looking pretty much standard.

Would an sti intercooler be big enough? Would the prodrive exhaust flow enough? Injectors? Obviously a remap. Anything else?

Thanks

Not sure what turbo is fitted to a standard rb5, but td05 will see you nicely up to around 330/340 with correct supporting mods, no lag either, why go spending on other turbos when this would be more than sufficient for your needs?

Thanks for the reply.

Which injectors, and would these turbos be a better option to the td05?

440 injectors will start running out of puff around 330/340, you can overcome this with a fuel pressure regulator to get that bit more out of them, but should be suffice for your level of power, exhaust will be fine, would be better if it was decatted though, and a remap would make full benefit of the mods you go for, original air box is good for 350bhp so stick with that and a decent panel filter in it, top mount intercooler from an sti 8 with a sti8 scoop to compliment it would again get you to where you want to be, would also suggest a walbro fuel pump to be on the safe side

I really dont want the massive bonnet scoop, just want to keep everything looking standard. Is the sti8 intercooler a straigh swap or are mods needed?

That's my recommendation as well, good upgrade and wouldn't cost too much either.

How much do you think in total including fitting?

Classic STI TMIC will be fine for that power levels I would have thought without having to shell out for an STI8 Undertray aswell (plus you would "ideally" want the bigger/taller scoop to make the most of the STI8TMIC)

Agreed. Or even standard intercooler is upto it.

No need for injector change or fuel pressure reg at this level.

Assuming decat already I normally see 320 to 340bhp with ecutek remap.

So simon, you think i could get 320ish with just a turbo and remap?

Are injectors and intercooler not required?

Is there a list anywhere of what is the optimum hp of each available turbo?

I am planning on going for a remap next year and am undecided between going for 280-290 or 320-330, but believe this would require 2 different turbos, td40h or td05 in the first instance, and prob a vf28 for the latter. (Also aware that each will require other mods)

Yes I would hope so.

Injectors fine to 340bhp.

Intercooler not essential but helps yes

Not really an accurate one.

Andy forrests site is quite good.

Vf28 forget it, old 12year old turbo.
Td04 280bhp max give of take a bit.

Vf22, vf23, vf24, vf28 - can see good results but fairly old now and generally see around 330 with supporting mods with the odd exception. Vf22 can make 360+ but old turbo and lots of damaged ones about.

Vf34/35 newer stronger units 340+ hp easy with supporting mods.

Would a Td05 from an Evo fit? you can pick one up 2nd hand for around £100-£150 and capable of 350+ depending on the variant

Ive already told the op that a td05 from a Subaru will get him over the figures he wants, but he seems hellbent on spending money on a different turbo for some reason??? Why buy an eve version when they are plentiful from factory Subaru,s??

That wasn't aimed at you mate, it annoys me when people ask for advice, you tell them something and they completely disregard it, why bother asking in the first place??

hehe

BTW, the Evo 9 80 series variant of the TD05 can make over 420 bhp, but they still go for about £450+ second hand, but very good turbos.

Whoah there. No need to get eggy because i only quoted a reply to someone that i know is a well regarded quality mapper.

I never said i was "hellbent" on any particular turbo, so really why are you getting excited? I have literally not mentioned a preference for any turbo, jusr asked about supporting mods. So really just calm down.

Can anyone tell me what are the pros and cons of the td05 and vf turbos?
