The ones with wheels not some made up rubbish flogged by the bank. You have 200,000 to spend on a vehicle that will give a higher return when sold than leaving it in the bank or similar.

What would you buy?

205 GTI in mint standard condition.
Ford Escort/Sierra cosworths (Standard)
Original mini's.
Lancia Delta Intgeralle
Also could you get your hands on an Aston DB4 for less than 200K at the moment? Or am I dreaming too much.

All good choices but just one car or bike.

I'm still thinking which or what would be my choice.

Ariel Atom V8 would be my choice. Not that many made, and in 10 years people will still be talking about how mental they are

It is surprising which cars seem to have taken a real upward trend over the years. Fords alone - Cortina Mk1's especially the 2 door variety and any 2 door MK1 or MK2 Escort mainly due to the racing heritage and the popularity of replicas, genuine lotuses and Mexicos will still climb further I think. If you can find a nice Mk1 Capri GXL 3.0 that will raise in value over the next few years, I would say an MK1 Capri 3100 RS but they are already fetching silly money. The escort cosworth is not regarded by some in the same way as the Sierra but a good condition lux could cost around £16k now, which is more than they were five years ago.
In terms of spending £200k I cant say I know many cars in this price range because it's not the sort of thing I look at, but a good collection of maybe ten or twenty solid investment classics would probably reach that figure, especially after a good premises is found where they can live wrapped in those bubbles which keep humidity at a level where they wont rust or deteriorate.

I don't think 200k for one vehicle is going to get you much in the world of post 1980's appreciating true exotica. You might be able to squeeze a Porsche 959 or a McMerc SLR 722. Other off beat suggestions would be homologation specials such as a Merc CLK AMG DTM or similar (although I can't think of any "similar"!)

Pre 1980's with that budget and there's a fair bit. A mint Ferrai 365 Daytona would be a good buy methinks.

2 AE86s about 8-10k each
3 Datsun fairladys a 240-260and280z about 10-20k each
1 DeTomaso Pantera GTS £40-60k
1 Autozam AZ-1 £6-10k
1 NSX-R

and the rest on restoration and a good ex potato storage barn (dry and humidity controlled for peanuts rent).

I'd rather hedge my bets and have some fun with a few cars.

But if that isn't allowed, I'd be bidding on a racing porsche of some description.

I think they still have a bit of depreciation to go yet, so you would have to be in it for the long haul.

I'd be looking at genuine ex DTM E30 M3s and Merc 190 Evos personally.

tr7 and put it in dry storage. I'l bring it out in 20 years and it will be the only one left, people will call it the "shape of things to come" and suddenly everything will be wedge shaped.
