We live in a bit of a hilly area, and last year was a bit of a nightmare due to the excess of ice and melted snow combined with the lack of gritted roads and pavements. Seeing as we're probably going to suffer another warmest winter on record, I thought it best to prepare hehe

I remember hearing of products such as Yaktrax and wondered if anyone had experience of those or a similar product?

If you mean for a car, what about 'snow socks'?

I bought some Yaktrax just after last winter but haven't had a chance to test them out yet.

Bought some YakTrax last winter for me and the missus.

Pros: They're absolutely mighty on compacted snow and ice. I wore them when stomping around the fields around here, and for crunching along pavements. You feel so much more confident with them on as the coiled springs really cut into the cold stuff.

Cons: They're a bit pricey.
When you step off the snow and ice and onto something like cleared tarmac, you end up "bouncing" on the springs with each step. It's a little disconcerting at first, and positively lethal if you are moving between the frozen pavements and into a slippy shopping centre.

So in summary, they're a bit like snow socks. They'll get you through the compacted snow like it wasn't there, but you must remove them the minute you tread onto a cleared surface.

Try the Michelen Ezy Grips, you get them for shoes or tyres.

Have a look here, a few options at different prices.

The Microspikes are really good- used by winter walkers where proper crampons are overkill.
