Just ordered a Nikon D70
Discussion
Thanks to srider et al. I have just put in an order for a Nikon D70, lens kit (18-70) with a 1GB CompactFlash card.
And the amazing part? It should be with me tomorrow!!! Wow! Last one in stock at the dealer I phoned.
So. We'll see how I get on learning to use it - I'm on holiday in a fortnight and I intend to put it to good use...
So thanks again for the advice and encouragement...

Nice one Don, I've ordered one too ![]()
Nikonites unite; it's about time the Canon hordes got a drubbing (he said provocatively)
Oh God! It'll be worse than TVR vs Porsche!

To be fair the D70 seems like bloody good competition against the Canon 300D and also the Nikon D100! The Canon 10D is the next step up again...and then there's the stratospheric stuff...
I'm considering going on one of those Nikon 1 day courses. Anyone think they're any good? Or bad? Quick and easy way of learning the camera, at least...

Canon launched a budget DSLR and de-specced it so it wouldn't compete with the 10D, but when Nikon did the same thing they kept pretty much the same features of the pricier D100.
And the 10D is £300 quid extra. As the review said, if you don't need ISO100, spend the difference on lenses

Not the price im gonna pay

The D70 has a much better feel than the 300d, which IMO feels plasticy and cheap. I am pretty convinced that the 10D is a superb piece of kit for the money. The price of the body as always pales into insignificance when faced with the price of canons image stabilising zoom lenses (gulp)...

Pah, Canon! Hairdresser's camera! You don't find Don McCullin using one, nor Don Hughes that other famous war photographer......
...only fit for the golf course!

This could take some time

After surviving this, the films were then overheated during developing, and only 9 shots were usable! How gutted must he have been!

Completely OT, but earlier on today I read an article about a WWII photographer called Robert Capa (who was using neither Nikon or Canon btw) who shot 79 frames on Omaha beach as part of the first wave of American troops landing on D-Day.

Even Im bloody fuming after reading that! I bet it was Tescos that developed it too!
Id be wanting to start another war!
(Went to the D-Day beaches after LM. Great phot opportunites. Shame I was too tired to take more than a handful. I went for a swim and then fell asleep instead!)
This is my pic of Arromanches (Omoha I think).

I got a D70.
Fantastic camera.
In fact, my pro photographer friend has tested it in his lab and he swears that it is BETTER than a Canon 10D...
More accurate exposure and much better flash capability apparently..
The Nikon is also much faster to start up and the memory is larger, allowing the motordrive to shoot more pictures at sports and stuff..
D70 is newer tech than the Canon, so should be better. Makes sense, as these things are computers these days, so Moores law applies..
