New MOT Certificate
Discussion
Had the MOT today, 39.99, and passed no problems.
Come to collect the certificate and it has all changed. It is now a plain A4 landscape paper with MOT VOSA ETC, looks like someone knocked it up in 5 minutes.
The first thing I thought, is how easy this would be to make your own, as the old style had the official looking paper backing and the information on the back.
The bloke said it was to save money by the government as the garage now supplies all the paper.
In this day and age, they should just give you a number and this should be able to be checked online.

That's exactly what the new bit of paper does, its basically a receipt that gives you the MOT number that you can verify online:

Had mine done on saturday and thought whats this piece of s
t paper youve just give me!!He said the certificate is now not much more than a receipt as all situations where you needed to show your certificate in the past are now all checked via computer systems.
The thing that annoys me about it is that altthough every government/insurance agency etc can now check online, it doesnt fully compensate for a water marked document. The document doesn't categorically state that it's effectively worthless as evidence of an MOT in its own right without further checks, so I could see non Internet savvy elderly people etc going to buy a car and being conned because they wouldn't have the knowledge to go online to check or read the small print on the MOT receipt which gives a number to all "for further information" which I presume you can use to do a check too, although its not obvious, and no doubt only manned office hours or a bit mor if you're lucky.

Can you do tax over the counter without a certificate now? I've done it online for the last 2 years..
Yes i taxed my car last month over the counter and he only asked to see my insurance certificate.I would of thought they would have details of weather or not the car is insured too as they do when you tax it online although maybe the post office systems are not quite up to speed with insurance details yet. Also agree with LocoBlade about the new certificate. Its ok for the police etc to have all the info at hand but when you go to buy a car and the MOT certificate is something that a 10yr old could knock up on a pc in 10 mins it means further online checking before commiting to a potential purchase.
