Been offered a free car...

... Which is great except it's an MOT failure. The car is a 1994 Fiesta Ghia 1.3 CVT (auto). It's failed for rot in both the nearside and offside rear break pipes, the nearside rear wheel's binding and washer not working.
Any thoughts on how hard this would be to fix (time and money) for a novice mechanic (although chartered Engineer!). Also, if i sent it to fleabay in the current condition is anyone likely to bid on it and what could it get?

Scrap it. It should have a cat so take that off first. Then weigh in the battery separately too and any alloy bits if possible (wheels?, radiator). You'll probably make near enough £200. eBay might net you the same but it's more hassle and less fun.
You could fix it up but why... it's a s

this was kind of my thought! plus it'd need tax... I've also just spoke to my current insurer; to add it to my existing insurance would cost £900 3rd party, £650 TpFT and £550 FC on a limited 4000 mile policy! My insurance is only £400 on a 2006 BMW 525d touring! You could fix it up but why... it's a s

So more from the bay than a scrappy?

If you just weighed it in as-is you might get £150ish, but if you separate out the more valuable metals first you could up that easily. I can't imagine you'd get an awful lot on eBay, maybe £250. But then you have to pay eBay fees, write an ad, deal with a buyer etc. Personally I'd just weigh it in. So more from the bay than a scrappy?

When I was given a 1994 1.3 fiesta I did this:

A scrapyard with have a specific price per ton they pay for scrap cars, regardless of what state they are in. You will be paid by weight regardless of what you have or havent taken off. It was £160/ton last time I weighed one in which had no wheels, battery, lots of broken glass and was full of junk. You will need to take the log book with you if you are scrapping it.
Batteries are worth £400/ton so worth doing seperately. Not sure on alloys with tyres or catalytic converters.

If your near one, motorhog. There on the radio all the time in the Yorkshire area. Don't know about where your near.
They have just offered me £150 scrap value collect or £160 drop off for my now knackered w reg Fiat 1.2 8v with a blown engine. I'm just waiting on them to pick it up this week.
Another scrappy near me (Cleethorpes) offered just a standard £80.
