Hi all,

I am looking at picking up a Range Rover Sport with a budget of no more than £24k

Having done a quick look on the internet, I think I would want at least an HSE spec.

My main concern is which engine to go for. I am quite keen to get the most economical RRS I can (if that is possible) so I have been looking at the 2.7 TDV6

Is this a decent engine from a reliability perspective and in terms of performance and economy for this size car ?

Parkers quote an average mpg of 30mpg for this engine, would that be accurate ?

I used to have a new Freelander 2 diesel but the economy on that was terrible. I am sure I was only getting around 19-20mpg on it. Not sure if it was faulty or because it was new !!!
As a result, I am a bit wary of claimed average mpg.

Any thing else I should be looking for or checking when buying ?

Also, would an independent dealer or private be a better purchase route ?

Thanks for your help.

If you drive it hard, the economy will suffer...

I'm impressed that you got the Freelander to <20mpg!!!!

Mine has been very reliable, as for 30mpg....forget it except for motorway cruising around the limit. Normal driving I'd say around mid 20's.

I recently sold a 55 plate RRS 2.7tdi hse with 77k miles to a trader for £16800.
Reliability wise didn't have any problems and servicing was now cheap as over 5 yrs old -199 for minor and 259 for major from LR franchised dealer!
Economy wise got average of about 23 mpg with mixed driving. This is about the same as I got from a new shape x5 and Audi Q7 both with 3 litre diesel engines. I understand the new RRS 3.6 engine is a lot smoother and just as economical.

Had mine from new, so just short of 6 yrs old, 68k, no warranty work, only costs have been routine servicing, tyres, & 1 set brake pads. I guess that makes it very reliable.

Thanks guys. They sure do Sound pretty reliable, particularly when you consider the poor reputation the Mk1 Freelander had !

Anything I should look out for when viewing these ?
Also, do people have pre-purchase inspections done on these and if so, any recommendations ?

DO NOT BUY A 2.7L.

I drove one before buying the TDV8 and the difference is a country mile!

Dont waste your money

Either you need to drive faster or I need to drive slower smile
I spend a lot of time on Northern Europe and tend to have a pretty high average speed 57mpg for the last months driving

I'm guessing that you have a pre 2010my car???

If so, that's how the BlueTooth module works!

The address book is not your phone address book as the car maintains a seperate one.

Yes Mate.

Its a 2007 model. The saleman at the dealers told me the bluetooth module will copy my phonebook.

IIRC - The BlueTooth module doesn't but if you had a compatible phone in the cradle adapter, it does.

I think he may have been getting confused with Freelander 2, as the BlueTooth module on that does copy the address book (AFAIK).

Is there a possible software update/grade.

Will the manual have instructions about how you input a contact?

No, there is no upgrade available.

The manual has all the details for entering contacts.
