Mum: i want to get a new car

me: what do you want

mum: somthing that's cheap to run new ish not to big low tax low insurance reliable.

me: somthing like a new shape clio or corsa then ill take you to have a look at the car supermarket place up the road.

every small/town car later we have a collection of ugly tinny tacky and boring cars. but i like that one and that one

bmw 1 series and a c220 coupe.

me: bang head yeah just what u said you wanted mum a small premium brand motor a lot older than the others and more expencive to run than the others

so long story short whats the opinons on the c220 cdi coupe and the 1 series d's

which is best and what should i be looking for on both.

prob going to be around the 70k mark and 05 ish plate to keep it in budget.

thanks guys.

Ditto. Get her to look at a Golf TDi and a Civic i-cdti (quality on one hand, interesting design on the other) as well...

My mum was exactly the same.

Told me she wanted something smaller than what she already had (Rover 600), needed to have 5 doors, seat 5 comfortably with a big boot. Wasn't fussed about insurance/running costs but had a budget of 3k.

Showed her every mid sized hatch I could think of. Leons, Civics, Focus' etc and some a bit bigger, Mazda 6, Mondeo etc.

I pretty much lost hope in the end and she was contemplating just keeping the Rover for a few more years instead. I had one last scour through autotrader to throw something up that I might have missed, even did a PH what car thread. Started searching by closest first and in budget. She was watching and pointed out a picture she liked the look of...

A Peugeot 206 cc. Probably the most opposite car to what she told me she wanted/needed.

It was the car she ended up buying.

because the diesel will be the most economical to run so it the best choise.

there have been a few reports of problems with duel mass flywheels on the one series. where as most of the mercs are auto

Not really, its a pointless exercise buying a diesel unless its doing big miles. You do realise the fuel costs more, as will the maintenance, and you run the risk of turbo failures etc and have the fun of a DPF if its new-ish? A chain-cam petrol would be the wise choice here.

Anyway, I think some sort of budget would be helpful if you want any useful suggestions!

Does she do enough mileage to justify a diesel? You will find that diesel cars cost more and can have many expensive issues - clutch, flywheel, DPF, injectors, turbos - that most people could do without.

If not - go for a petrol!

All good points. She will do about 15k a year for the next few years.

I've seen her last night and it gets better. I don't like convertibles but that's a nice one. (9-3 cab). Her budget is no more than 7k
