£5,000 For insurance? I THINK NOT.
Discussion
Hey, i created this topic to finally clear up all the commotion about young drivers insurance (17/18 Year old)
I am one of those thousands of 17/18 year olds who have spent hour on the net, looking for 'cheap' car insurance and finally agreeing with the fact that it is impossible to get a 'normal' car at such a young age.
However, us, young drivers need a car. The older generation might not understand the vital importance of owning a car at this age so please do not write on this topic about things such as safety and that you should wait a couple of years before getting a car. There is no time to wait.
Imagine having to walk 5miles, down a pitch black road at 11pm, alone
Its not a nice feeling. This is one of the many reasons i NEED a car, not WANT, I NEED it.
As i already have established, a 'normal' car is not an option as we are not millionaires, so another option is having a classic or a kit car. Preferably a kit car as the mileage and driving hours are not so restricted.
Now, where, us, young drivers would be able to get a 'kit car' for say, upto £2,000.
I dont mean one of those fancy, Robin Hood or Falcon cars, I mean a car, which looks like an ordinary car, or a sports car, not one of those posh classic looking cars which cost THOUSANDS of pounds.
A substitute for a vauxhall corsa, or a renault clio
It doesnt have to be all nicely hand made and look all too fancy. It just has to be a reliable car which would just pass as a 'kit car'
If it is impossible to buy one of these, is it possible to get, for example, a Vauxhall Vectra and change the insides, and insure it for a lower price on a 'kit car insurance'?
Please Please Please, dont neglect this post or class it as one of those tacky 17year old kit car insurance, and recommend us to get some driving experience
To summarise, we need a car which we could get for less than £2,000 and insure it for less than £1,000 (or so) on a kit car insurance.
Please post all your ideas and knowledge here as There are THOUSANDS of us suffering this same problem. Let this post be the last post about a topic such as this, Lets all get together and beat the high insurance prices and change the lifes of millions of responsible teenagers for good!
UPDATE
This is what i gathered from all the lonely folks that put effort in to help, and all those horrible biased peeps aswell
A very enlightening piece of information from 'One Eyed Mick' :
"if it has ti.ts or wheels it will cost you money!!
Insurance Companies:
Footman James
Suitable Cars:
GTM K3
Midas
Quantum Mk1 Coupe
Quantum Saloon
Quantum 2+2
Quantum H4
This is great guys! Lets keep this up and solve it or atleast get some ideas!
What we need now is some more cars which could be easily bought and still fit the criteria?
Because all these Quantums are VERY rare

The only car i can think of what you want is a quatum kit car. There are a couple of versions
Mk1 coupe
saloon
2+2
h4
The first 2 are hard tops the other 2 are convertiable.
I have a mk1 coupe cost me £435 insurance £735 i got the insurance when i was 18 im now 19.
All based on fiesta xr2 apart from the h4 which is based on the later mk3 fiesta. Some have zetec, rs turbo engine conversions but most stay with the standared 1.6 cvh engine.
Here is my mk1 coupe you will be very lucky to get one of these only 17 made and only 8 or so on the road

If you want any more information about them there a quantum kit car forums which is full of owners with different version who will be able to help.
Hope this help.

Tell me where I'm wrong then?
Insurance companies load the insurance for those that cost them the most.
Do you imagine that you are the first generation that has walked anywhere??
If you can't afford to insure a car, then don't get one. I can't afford a helicopter.
How about a scooter if you can't afford a car?
The current young generation loves it's lifestyle full of gadgetry and stuff that previous generations never had. Well maybe you all should have been saving.

Ignore the others most people on here like critisin post instead of trying to help.
Roland,
Your question is...what on earth can I purchase that gives me freedom of mobility without killing me on insurance?
We've all been there...done that, some of us now have sons/daughters going through it and understand exactly how much it costs.
Walk/Bus/Train/Taxi are the obvious ones (you can buy a lot of taxi rides for what it will cost you to run a car).
Scooter/small motor bike - easily the cheapest...but wet!
Kit Car - most insurance companies will now have a minimum age requirement (phone some of them and ask).
Single Marque Classic/Club insurance - eg MG might also be a good way of getting cheaper (not cheap) insurance - go grab a classic car mag and read the adverts.
Well done for thinking slightly out of the box, shows you've got a bit of get up and go rather than just lying down and taking it, but please don't make the assmumption that "we" don't understand....that's just silly ;-)
Good luck on your search
Jim

Not that I'm in the UK any more.. But remember those nice little hatchbacks the Citron Saxo, now there expensive to insure for everyone not just the young because the younger gen drove them and the inevitable happened. Now for some reason the Insurance companies didn't take into account the Age of us drivers and kind of black flagged the cars instead.
So be warned if lots of young kids start crashing there Kit Cars you know whats going to happen to your premiums.....
On your side I do agree that anything over 1K is just silly for insurance no matter what you want to drive, my 19 daughter has just paid 900 pounds for a 1 Litre Micra, we only paid 500 for the car..

Roland,
My daughter is only 13 and we are preparing her car now, the car of choice is a 1969 Morris Minor 2 door saloon, on a classic limited miles policy it would currently cost her a just under a grand to insure, the car has been lightly uprated with bigger brakes all round and a 5 speed box.
The classic route at the moment is a good idea. You would be amazed at what actually can be had on a classic policy.

not being cheeky but why not try vauxhall /citroen garage etc-some may offer free ins as they did for corsas/c1/c2 to entice people to buy and then once had for year same ins company will give you better rates if no probs,go with parent to show you are sensible etc
martin
You are suggesting that an 18yo with few stable employment prospects, signs up to finance deal on ~£8000, in order to save on insurance? Not sounding like a great plan to me.martin
I think the OP is looking for some kind of holy grail. If it was that easy, everybody would do it. It just isn't.
Which would be why I didn't get a car until I was 21 and a 5 mile cycle down dark lanes to work was nothing unusual 10 years ago. And I don't see what's changed massively in the last 10 years on that front. I'd suggest a push bike, or if flush with cash a moped of some description.
You don't NEED a car. You WANT one, but guess what, good things have to be EARNED and waited for. Driving is a privilege not a right.
I'm afraid this is a great example of the L'Oreal generation - "I'm worth it".
Save up for a few years, then get one when you can afford one. I did. Either that or get a moped. Or a pushbike. Or taxis.
£5000 for insurance? I think so. Young people crash, a lot. Therefore young people are a bad risk. Therefore young people have to cough up or make alternative arrangements.

I understand the desire for your own car. When I was 17, I wanted a car so badly it hurt.
I sympathise with young drivers today. Insurance of around £4k a year is outrageous. My first car cost me £650 to insure in 1987, which according to the Bank of England, is equivalent to around £1,425 today. So things are worse, but not madly so. Lots of things cost double today compared with yesterday. Lots of things are a lot cheaper too, like TVs, computers, hi-fis, clothes etc. so don't moan too much.
Try getting quotes for types of car that have traditionally been cheap to insure, like Land Rovers or classics.

It is not accident rates that are pushing premiums up, it is the value of the claims that is doing it.
Its the accident management companies charging extortionate rates for hire cars and ambulance chasing scum sucking lawyers that are the biggest contributors to insurance rate hikes.
